How to be the parent your ADHD child needs–and to be less frustrated and calmer in the process.

Parenting is hard work. Throw in something like ADHD, and it can seem impossible. Do you often feel stressed, frustrated, disrespected, and just plain tired? Don’t worry: You’re not alone. Nearly 6.2 million children in the United States have been diagnosed with ADHD–you share the faith of all those parents. When you think about the difficulties you face in parenting an ADHD child, you should also think about the difficulties they face navigating a world that wasn’t created with them in mind.

Parenting ADHD children takes a special skill set and requires us to see the world through their lenses But it doesn’t mean children with ADHD can’t be successful. Just look at Michael Phelps and Justin Timberlake...the list goes on and on. We can teach our children to “change their outcomes” and find success by implementing concrete, proven strategies to help them navigate all of life's challenges. The Ultimate Guide to Parenting Your ADHD Child will provide you with the strategies to help your child navigate this world In this book, you will discover:

  • How ADHD affects the entire family, from your other children to your relationship with your spouse
  • A helpful list of ADHD medications, including their benefits and drawbacks
  • Guidelines on managing ‘big emotions’ and impulsive behaviors to avoid meltdowns from your child and yourself
  • Why self-care matters, for both children and parents (and how to get past that Mom Guilt)
  • And so much more….

Don’t let parenting an ADHD child feel like a burden–something you have to “get through.” By employing the techniques in this book, you will find a renewed sense of purpose in parenting your ADHD kid, even if you have tried behavior modifications and still feel hopeless.

Positive parenting for my unique child

My 8-year-old son has autism and ADHD. I found the techniques taught in this book to be helpful to help him have the best and happiest life he can. He acts out often, but it isn’t that he’s trying to be “a bad kid”. It’s because he processes things differently than other kids and that can be difficult for me to know how to handle in the correct way. This books has helped teach me proper techniques for my unique child. I found “the basket method” in this book to be especially helpful for dealing with tantrums.

The book is easy-to-follow ways to teach kids and it offered practical strategies that were really real such as visual reminders, working on memory and temper tantrums. This book can empower parents with the right tools and resources to allow their children to thrive.

REALLY GREAT INFORMATION

So my take from this book is that Etta C. Love is an absolute expert on all things ADHD. The thoroughness and completeness of this book is unmatched. Not only does she seem to have expert knowledge that is well planned out and studied but she brings the parental perspective to this subject that so many physicians seem to neglect. The book is a step-by-step guide that starts with simply defining ADHD and she breaks this complicated issue down so we can all understand.

After this, she describes the evaluation and diagnosis process in detail. Treatment options are discussed with and without medication. During the medication section, she gives pros, cons, side effects, etc. She has a section that deals with diet and exercise (or movement)and how this conditions the ADHD person. She has a section on helping our kids with their memory and how to use visual type reminders to keep our kids on task and focused.

I cannot recommend this book enough to parents, teachers, doctors, nurses, and anyone dealing with ADHD kids. I plan to purchase the hardback version to make notes in etc…..GREAT BOOK!!

Great advice

Excellent techniques to assist with dealing with ADHD. Wise, information rich and clearly tons of experience in this area. Extremely thorough and well presented. I especially like the section on using medication and the implications etc. You will definitely come away with a better understanding and feel more equipped to deal with and face each challenge. I also liked the focus on the type of foods that might make the situation worse. Great book!

Great information

I enjoyed this book as a parent to a child with ADHD. I especially appreciated that there were many different strategies disused, not just focused on one.

Discovered a natural approach to treating ADHD

I’ve been on the hunt for ways of dealing with my child’s ADHD in more natural way. Blindly throwing pharmaceuticals at him is foolish without first trying alternative routes, especially when the side-effects of these medications are often worse than the problem they treat.

Chapter three covers all of my questions, concerns, and MORE! For one, removing sugar from his diet and taking a more keto route has been a godsend. Yes it’s slightly difficult to transition a child off of sugar but believe me, the results speak for themselves!

He’s calmer. More focused. Less anxious. And has a cleaner more calm energy throughout the day rather than a blast of rabid frustration.

I could go on and on about the other suggestions mentioned in chapter three alone but I would spoil the author’s work…

The narrator’s voice is absolutely perfect too and made it very easy for me to consume the information without fighting boredom.

Thank you for this incredible resource that will go on to help thousands of parents like me and children facing the alluding diagnosis of ADHD!

Great parenting tool

I really appreciated the wide variety of helpful tips in so many areas of parenting. It really warmed my heart to know that I was not alone feeling like knowing one child may need more attention but how do you do that with out sacrificing a balanced way for all. That is something I struggle with and was helpful to get advice. This book is really encouraging and great reference when needed.

Great nuggets of wisdom and excellent strategies

I bought this as friends child has ADHD and I figured it might help me interact better with him. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I learned. The author put lots of nuggets of wisdom in the book. Plus great strategies to use right away and as I progress in my relationship. I think it is a wonderful book and you’d get a lot out of it.

Incredibly valuable on many levels

For starters, this book helped me overcome much of the guilt I’ve felt, sometimes getting frustrated at the inappropriate actions my son sometimes engages in. I loved the idea of “mindfulness,” especially about having me stay calm and not instantly react to my son’s inappropriate actions. The idea of saying, “Give me a second,” rather than responding immediately was valuable. And it works!

The idea that it’s easy to misunderstand what my son is going through, was helpful, and something I shared with my other kids.

It was interesting how certain foods, especially sugar, add to seemingly uncontrollable anxiety in my son. The idea of making sure I include protein-rich foods, even when I give him fruit, was interesting.

I loved the idea of “visual interaction.” … definitely something I would never have considered, especially dealing with helping my son be more accountable and keeping him on track to do things like keep his room clean.

Labeling emotions was a clever way to separate anger from sadness and overwhelm in my son.

Having the author engaging in chats with her friend Carrie helped make it easier to understand and relate to many of the issues and tips in the book.

I especially loved the idea of creating a “safe space,” at home, where my son realizes I am not going to respond negatively if he gets overwhelmed or angry, where his emotions would overtake him.

I definitely recommend this book to any parent with an ADHD child.
