Publisher's summary

In this provocative thriller, forensic expert Kay Scarpetta is surrounded by familiar faces, yet traveling down the unfamiliar road of fame....

It is the week before Christmas. A tanking economy has prompted Dr. Kay Scarpetta—despite her busy schedule and her continuing work as the senior forensic analyst for CNN—to offer her services pro bono to New York City’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. In no time at all, her increased visibility seems to precipitate a string of unexpected and unsettling events, culminating in an ominous package—possibly a bomb—showing up at the front desk of the apartment building where she and her husband, Benton, live. Soon the apparent threat on Scarpetta’s life finds her embroiled in a surreal plot that includes a famous actor accused of an unthinkable sex crime and the disappearance of a beautiful millionaire with whom her niece, Lucy, seems to have shared a secret past.

Scarpetta’s CNN producer wants her to launch a TV show called The Scarpetta Factor. Given the bizarre events already in play, she fears that her growing fame will generate the illusion that she has a “special factor,” a mythical ability to solve all her cases. She wonders if she will end up like other TV personalities: her own stereotype.

Simply fantastic

I LOVE this series. As someone who works in the medical field, it’s fascinating to me; but the story, the characters… It’s a universe that builds on itself, and has continuity from book to book. I love the evolution of the characters, the story as it unfolds… Never stop writing this. ❤️

Another great addition to the series! I’m happy for all of them that they can now be happy and at ease!

Bentley!

After the Scarpetta book, I was worried we’d lost Bentley again, but he’s back to the man I love with Scarpetta. And we got Kate Reading back narrating

Another dum Scarpetta slog...

What has happened to this great series??? It began as a solid, forensic-based drama and has now morphed into a freaky day-time soap opera, complete with narcissistic, whining characters and a convoluted overall storyline. It's like water soaked cardboard as it plods along with stupid plots and ridiculous writing. Such a waste of a promising series ..

A struggle to go through

I read several books by Patricia Cornwell and liked the stories of Scarpetta as a medical examiner solving cases with Marino. This one was a huge disappointment: the story goes on forever with an enormous amount of totally unnecessary details. The story itself is not very interesting to start with and it is very poorly developed. The characters have changed from past books and are less likeable. It was a real torture to listen to this story which could have been a lot shorter. Final disappointment was the last chapter where the plot is finally explained and that just confirmed that the entire story was badly developed throughout the book. Sixteen hours (length of the audible version of the book) of my life I will not get back. Definitely I won’t be reading other P. Cornwell books in the future.
