Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs’s twenty-second high-stakes thriller featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan who, following a series of bizarre disappearances on the islands of Turks and Caicos, enters a sinister labyrinth in which a new technology may wreak worldwide havoc.

Called in to examine what is left of a person thought to have been struck by lightning, Tempe traces an unusual tattoo to its source and is soon embroiled in a much larger case. Young men—tourists—have been disappearing on the islands of Turks and Caicos. Seven years earlier, the first victim was found in a strange location with his left hand hacked off; subsequently, two other visitors vanished without a trace. But recently, tantalizing leads have emerged and only Tempe can unravel them.

Maddeningly, the victims seem to have nothing in common—other than the odd places where their bodies turn up, and the fact that none seems likely to have been involved in criminal activity. Do these attacks have something to do with the islands’ seething culture of gang violence? Tempe isn’t so sure. Disturbingly, she discovers evidence that what’s at stake may have global significance.

It isn’t long before the sound of a ticking clock grows menacingly loud. Then Tempe herself becomes a target.

A great, but short, book

Great book, well written, per the usual.... but *so* short. More like a Novella. I could have read this one in my free time vs using up my monthly free credit for a book I only got to listen to for a few days. So, really disappointed at that. Because it was so short, the story was not very in-depth and as detailed as her stories usually are. The story was great, had the potential to be more than what it was though. Hoping her next novel is longer then 9 hrs, or, at least is not categorize is as a "Novel", which is very misleading. But, absolutely love her writing!

I'm Fangirling All Over Tempe! (And, Kathy!)

THANK YOU for keeping politics to a bare minimum! Praise all that is holy, I truly ENJOYED every aspect of this book! YAY!!!

Terrific story and excellent mystery, plus enduring and endearing characters that were all tied up with a ribbon (natch)! It was such a great escape and, as always, I learned some history and histology (and other medical whatnot)! Thank you, thank you, Kathy!!

Linda is NOW 100% Tempe for me! She's terrific! (Okay, I still love Barbara Rosenblat--who I was able to fangirl email with before she got famous--but Linda is a force and I love her, too!)

Great book, and I'm on pins and needles for the next!!!

Complex and easy to Follow

The story is many turns, but narrations and storyline kept it simple to listen to.

Reliable Kathy Reichs pleaser

Kathy Reiches can be relied upon to provide an enjoyable mystery, and sometimes a thriller. This one misses the thrill but was still good entertainment. Dr. Tempe Brennan’s case takes her to an island this time and we meet new characters, adding enjoyment to the listen. I always learn something new about anthropology, geology, or another science which adds interest to the main storyline.
Overall, not the best nor the worst of the series. However, Kathy Reichs on a bad day is still a great day for her followers! Linda Emond’s excellent narration makes these stories flow.
