Publisher's summary

She’s small-town business. He’s Manhattan high finance. Together they ignite in a novel about unexpected love and danger by Nancy Herkness, award-winning author of the Wager of Hearts series.

New Jersey bookkeeper Alice Thurber has a carefully constructed risk-free life. Everything in perfect balance. Until little discrepancies show up in her clients’ accounts. Most would ignore it. Not the impeccably precise Alice. In desperation she reaches out to a high-powered consulting firm for help. New York City’s movie-star handsome financial wizard Derek Killion reaches back. All he has to do is smile and Alice’s fantasies stir. A girl can dream, can’t she?

A cofounder of KRG, Derek’s promise is to advise small-business owners in trouble. He never guessed that assisting the diffident but sexy Alice would be so captivating and make it so hard to keep his desires in check. But just as intriguing is the alarming puzzle behind the computer glitch that’s unsettled his client. As the investigation unfolds, they must also confront an attraction too palpable to ignore. Every new dark twist they follow is only bringing them closer together - in passion and in danger.

Good story

I actually read the second book in this series first and really enjoyed it so I wanted to read this one. It was fun- I liked both the characters, Alice and Derek. Alice, especially, is a fun character- a little obsessive which makes her a great book keeper. Derek is, from the beginning, sweet and I loved their interactions. There was romance, steaminess and a bit of intrigue and action so overall, a well rounded story. This was a little drawn out but overall, I never lost interest.

I love kindle unlimited's read and listen program and I got to listen to the audiobook through that program. And it was well done- Laurie West played all the characters really well and she paced herself really well. I enjoyed the narration but did wish there was also a male voice.

Loved this one!

I both read this book and listened to the audio and I loved this story. The chemistry behind Derek and Alice was excellent but I really enjoyed the suspense in this one. Although Derek came in to help Alice, she demonstrated that she could take care of herself too. This was a very sweet story and I'm looking forward to the next one!

The Money Man

I really enjoyed this one to a point. Alice is a small town accountant and starts using a new accounting program for her clients that should really only be used as a single family application so she should not be using it in her business but at least she is so OCD she freaks when her clients are short by a few dollars and contacts a Manhattan firm to look into the problem. Derek Killion is a founding partner of KRG and when he meets Alice she is not what he expects. This story was full of heat and chemistry and even some suspense. I was not thrilled with Alice's regency kick but, hey, that is her thing...Overall, this was a great story and I will be on the watch for the next in the series!

Wow... innocence, suspense, sex!

This quick read kept me on my toes from page 1 through the end! The story of an innocent small business owner who inadvertently becomes entangled in an international scam. As for the sex and romance, pick up the book… You won’t be disappointed.

Good Story

This book is about a young female book keeper who has her world rocked when she can't make the numbers add up. She acquires the assistance of H and they go on a small adventure solving the mystery.

This was a good story although a bit predictable. I shorted this book a star due to how wordy it was with all of the descriptions. I fast-forwarded it several times because of the wordiness. In my opinion it made the book drag.
The narrator was good but not my favorite. She was very soft spoken and narrated in her own voice for the H part of the story. Two narrators would have been better or one who could narrate male characters better.
This book was written in the 3rd person

Different 2.5 Stars

Not something I would read again. More of a noise filler book for me that didn't keep my interest. No emotional pull. No identifying with the characters. Not worth my time or credit. Needs more depth

Can an accounting software glitch lead to love?

Bookkeeper Alice can’t find the $3 shortage in one of her client’s books. She reaches out to a large accounting firm, through a small business initiative program, and is pleasantly surprised when one of the partners contacts her directly. Derek Killion is busy preparing for a presentation to a large Asian client but decides to meet with Alice. Derek is impressed with Alice’s intelligence and doggedness...and he is insanely attracted to her. Alice lives vicariously through her historical romances and immediately casts Derek as one of her book boyfriends. As the pair work together, and explore their mutual attraction, it becomes obvious that Alice has stumbled upon a scam. Can Derek keep her safe and gather evidence of the crime?
Love the seemingly simplicity of the story. Very engaging and enjoyable.
