Publisher's summary

Rex “TW” McMurtry’s perpetual singlehood wouldn’t bother him so much if all his ex-girlfriends didn’t keep marrying the very next person they dated, especially when so many of those grooms are his closest friends. He may be a pro-football defensive end for the Chicago Squalls, but the press only wants to talk about how he’s always a groomsman and never a groom. Rex is sick of being the guy before the husband, and he’s most definitely sick of being the best man at all their weddings.

Bartender Abigail McNerny is the gal-pal, the wing-woman, the she-BFF. She’s dated. Once. And once was more than enough. Privy to all the sad stories of her customers, "contentment over commitment" is her motto, and Abby is convinced no one on earth could ever entice her into a romantic relationship...except that one guy she’s loved since preschool.

The guy who just walked into her bar.

The guy who doesn’t recognize her.

The guy who is drunk and needs a ride home.

The guy who has a proposition she should definitely refuse.

I love Penny Reid!

I fell in love with Penny Reid’s writing in her Knitting in the City series and the Winston Brothers. Homecoming King was just as good… with a sweet tie back to Knitting in the City. I cannot wait until December when the Drama King is released! And Joy Nash is once again fantastic!

Some sloppy research

From someone who lives in Central Texas, the snowstorm is highly improbable. And because snow in the quantity portrayed in the book is a once in a century occurrence, there would be no snowplow businesses in the area. Have you been to Texas?

Dreamy, swoony, captivating romance

I’ve come to just know Penny Reid novels will have that extra special something and Homecoming King is no exception. ADORABLE! Her characters never fail to make me wish they are actually my neighbors, friends, or relatives which means I always dearly miss them when the story ends. Aunt Sal was a hoot. The relationships around Abby and Rex are heart warming too. Neither have supportive parents, but both had other friends or relatives that stepped up to provide affirmation, love, and care. Joy Nash is an exceptionally skilled narrator, doing both the male and female voices perfectly - she really brings Rex and Abby to life. I loved this book - it had sweet, romantic, and endearing moments but was not without some unpredictable (yet not overly angsty) twists and turns.

I am a big Penny Reid Fan

The story was good and the book was enjoyable. I did feel like there wasn’t enough couple development and too much focus on the the crazy in her head. I understood Abby’s concerns after the first 15 chapters.
The performance was excellent.

Awesome

So now I have found the perfect formula. Joy Nash is the perfect narrator for Penny Reid books. Only Joy Nash and Sébastien should narrate Penny Reid books. They make listening enjoyable

Perfect everytime

Never disappointed with Penny’s stories or her choice of readers. Buying an audible subscription for my mature daughter and putting Penny’s audibles on it. I think I’ve heard them all and want more. Stories so insightful.

Laugh out loud funny

I’ve been in an audible funk lately and keep trying different books. This book caught me immediately from the fun and witty writing to the performer. Everything about this book was a yes for me.

Another Penny Reid win

How does she do this EVERY TIME?! Seriously - always something I love. This is a bit of a slow burn, but great payoff. I’m a sucker for the Fake dating/marriage of convenience, but throw in Professional Athlete and it hits next level. Abby had a crush on Rex since they were kids… but seeing him as a brooding-yet-caring man? Yes, please! The banter is perfect and 🌶️🌶️ once the spice hits.
