Publisher's summary

All 12-year-old Marinka wants is a friend. A real friend. Not like her house with chicken legs. Sure, the house can play games like tag and hide-and-seek, but Marinka longs for a human companion. Someone she can talk to and share secrets with.

But that's tough when your grandmother is a Yaga, a guardian who guides the dead into the afterlife. It's even harder when you live in a house that wanders all over the world...carrying you with it. Even worse, Marinka is being trained to be a Yaga. That means no school, no parties - and no playmates that stick around for more than a day.

So when Marinka stumbles across the chance to make a real friend, she breaks all the rules...with devastating consequences. Her beloved grandmother mysteriously disappears, and it's up to Marinka to find her - even if it means making a dangerous journey to the afterlife.

With a mix of whimsy, humor, and adventure, this debut novel will wrap itself around your heart and never let go.

Cozy, and comforting

Very cute and well written. Comforts in a way I've not seen before, particularly for those who are lonely and/or live alone. The story also portrays the morbid event of death as something more hopeful than usual. The ending was a little bit rushed but good. Wish there was more!

Great family book

My 8 year old scrolled through the available titles and landed on this one with a chuckle. We both listened and enjoyed this story very much. His 13 year old brother jumped in about half way and became invested in knowing how it ended too.

Great book for the whole family

My 7 year old was completely obsessed and I enjoyed it too. My five year old was perhaps less interested in following along but the was nothing inappropriate so that was fine.

Engaging Tale Takes Readers on a Cosmic Ride

This book was a wonderful companion as my 96-year old father entered the last days of his amazing life. So much in the book resonated with me as I reflected on the great gift of his life and his imminent "return to the stars." The characters are well-crafted, the plot with all its twists and turns is well paced, and the narration of all the different voices well done. it reads like a folk tale and takes readers on a cosmic ride, imagining the journey of The Dead as they are guided by Yaga to return to the stars. Most of all, I loved the main character, Marinka, and her persistence and courage in seeking her own destiny. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Required Reading is TERRIBLE

I hate this book, the plot is bad. The majority of what they say is “ Baba this” and “Yaga that”
