Publisher's summary

Could the Highlander be more dangerous than a poisoned gown?

Kerr Gordon, next in line to be chief of the Gordon Clan, is tasked by Mary, Queen of Scots to bring to bring a gift to her cousin—and jailer—Queen Elizabeth of England. When he arrives at Whitehall Palace to find a courtly woman tied up in the stables, he acts to save her, only to be rebuked for dispatching an assassin before she could hear his confession.

Queen Elizabeth calls Maggie Darby her sacrificial lamb: Maggie's job is to try on all of the queen's gowns and accessories before she wears them—just in case they're poisoned. Trained by her father, Maggie has no intention of dying in the line of duty. She's learned all about poisons and how to test for them.

When the handsome Highland warrior who saved her in the stables is accused of treason, Maggie's instincts tell her that he's been framed. As they work together to find the true traitors in Queen Elizabeth's court, the smoldering fire that's been growing between them erupts into an inferno that threatens to change their worlds forever.

Contains mature themes.

Great start to a new series

So happy Heather McCollom has started this new series. It’s a great portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I and get courtiers. She comes off as being very mischievous and wiley- it’s very entertaining. As usual, Tim Campbell does a stellar job at bringing the characters to life. Can’t wait for the rest of the series!

Sweet but predictable

Tim Campbell can salvage any story. Albeit a sweet tale the events were predictable. Still enjoyed the read.

Nice story

Almost like an old-fashioned romance novel with a little bit of sex added. A very little bit but needed to update the story and to finish the arc. No angst. Perfect narration.

ok story, great narration

The story is ok. Nothing necessarily bad about it. It just doesn't sparkle. It doesn't feel like the work of an excellent author - more like a first attempt by a novice that had the heart and soul edited out of it. Ghost written?

Very slow story, which was hardly developed by the end

Even though this author has kept my interest through so many of her books, this one I finished merely because I had paid for it. Never would I have expected that it was from the same person. The most obvious dissatisfaction was that the hero in the story was not given an equal effort in the tale as the heroine. He never had a family, or home or past, except in the tiniest way. Yes, there was a story, but she didn’t need him to be there at all except to make a reason to call it a romance.

Slow and mediocre.

Even excellent narration couldn’t save this one. Spend your credit for a more worthy title.
