Publisher's summary

Fleeing with only her bow, horse, enormous pet wolf, and the cryptic clues hidden in her mother's medicine journal, healer Meg Boswell gallops north toward freedom, running from the man who falsely accused her mother of witchcraft. Cursed with magical healing abilities, Meg knows that if she's captured, she will die like her mother - atop a blazing witch's pyre.

Winter winds rip across the Highlands, pressing Chief Caden Macbain forward in his desperate plan to save his clan. He's not above using an innocent woman to bargain for peace if it keeps his clan from starving. But Meg isn't who Caden thinks she is, and when she kills a man to save the clan, he must choose between duty and her life. For although he captured her to force a peace, Meg's strength and courage have captured Caden's heart.

Contains mature themes.

Good up till ...

I really loved it up until about chapter 10... then the potential love story took a turn for me. Although the were additional situations that tried to force romance, it was just never the same for me. Sadly, the once fierce, admirable heroine made some very dumb moves as though she completely changed.
It all just fizzled from there and the end drags and drags.

Fantastic

Heather never disappoints. Great story and characters. I wish Tim Campbell narrated EVERY book I listen to. I have listened to hundreds of books and he is by far the best narrator!

Great!

Wow! This is a great story! It has passion adventure and depth! It may have pulled a few tears from my eyes... I loved the main characters, especially the strong female lead who is not sappy and overreactive. And I loved her loyal wolf friend!

Good story, a little silly

This was a pretty good story. It was mostly developing love, with a tinge of relationship controversy. But for the most part it was not too filled with relationship angst, which is not my favorite plot flavor.
The part I found silly was the 'magic' and witchery. I knew it was in there, and I've read many historical novels that contained 'healers, however, none of them actually had magical healing. Like the ability to conjure light filled orbs, or the mystical sense of others physical secrets. So at first I was a little put off because I do like to imagine, when reading fiction, that there is some plausibility to the story and for me in this one there was not. But once I got past that I just enjoyed the story for what it was and had fun. The secondary characters were absolutely fun and should be fun to move forward with in the next books.
I normally prefer women narrators because for me it's easier to listen to women faking men's voices than it is to hear men faking women's voices (which is unfair to negatively review a man for a bad women's voice imo by the way) Tim Campbell is one of two male narrators that I will listen to. He did a great job in this one and I eventually even forgot that the women's voices were from a male narrator and they just blended into the story.

I got this on a 2/1 sale and feel it was worth it. I definitely don't feel it would be worth a whole credit, partly because I'm extremely choosy about what I spend a whole credit on. And this is only a 9+ hour book which I would only under extremely rare circumstances (required reading?) spend a whole credit on.

Did Not Expect to Enjoy It

I have listened to two other books by this author and thoroughly enjoyed them. I was quick to purchase the third and didn’t read the summary and within the first few minutes, talking of her blue light and magic powers I groaned. I’m not a fan of those types of books but I decided to see if I could push through.

I enjoyed this book as I did the others. Really like the unexpected laughs.

The characters are well developed and the story is another one that drags out but not overly so. If you are hesitant about the magic aspect, it’s really not a sci-fi type story aside from her having healing powers. Give it a shot.

Heather McCollum rocks‼️

I almost gave up on my first 3 recorded books by author Ms McCollum… the original stories and fascinating glims of living in those days held me in thrall … after struggling through the first I read ( I wanted to see how the story evolved ) I had the notion to turn the recording speed way below the norm….that simple act of slowing the voice reading down, as frustrating as it felt, allowed me to hear what was said… that’s a big deal as I’m what you call a very fast talking Bostonian yankee …
I actually read two more that way and was rewarded Bc the stories where original and situation-realistic sounding… then, as I searched another McCollum book out… a new narrator blew me away… it was if the stories were now perfectly complete … mr Timothy Campbell was a heavenly kissed concoction like an exquisite icing on a perfect cake … now being read a tale written by this clever author was a treat …. that satisfied all the senses… I’ll look for Mr. T. Campbell’s other narrations …and hope they include further McCollum books……P.C.
