Publisher's summary

A memoir from singer-songwriter Madison Beer, chronicling the past decade of her life spent in the spotlight—the ups, the downs, and the in-betweens that you won’t see on social media.

Discovered at twelve years old, Madison Beer was one of the first artists to have her entire life documented online. Over the past decade, she has navigated the spotlight as a child, through her teenage years, and now as a young woman in her twenties.

In The Half of It, Madison pulls back the curtain to show the behind-the-scenes of her journey, from reckoning with mass hate online and the time her private pictures were leaked, to battling suicidal thoughts while making her highly acclaimed debut album, Life Support, and her recovery since then. This memoir is an honest and unflinching account of self-love, mental health, and advocacy from one of the fastest-rising musical voices and most influential social media presences of her generation. It hammers home the point, more striking and urgent than ever, that no matter how close the internet may make us feel to people, we truly don’t know the half of it.

Courage personified at 24?

Madison, in my estimation, your resilience results from a deep capacity for courage; it's genuinely remarkable.

As a memoir ghostwriter, a through-line I find in most memoirs I love to read or help write is true courage. Madison, your brief yet soul-stirring piece captivates and seeks to empower—and how could it not? It's who you are! Bravo; not so selfish after all, huh? :)

It's astonishing how traumas we're used to seeing only speakable in the pages of much older person's life are here in the chapters of a 24-year-old. That will only be more and more prevalent as mental health becomes less stigmatized, and society must learn to allow growth and transformation in those around us, despite our insecurities.

I hate you had to deal with any of it, but your grace stands proud, Madison. And since you don't seem willing to trade any of it, as one of your many readers, I'm inclined to appreciate it all for what it is, too: years you were able to establish and build a sense of courage that now impacts and lifts others. Again, bravo!

PS It bears mention that although I work in the field, I had no hand in helping with any part of this book. I'm an avid memoir reader as part of my profession and as a personal interest. I remember seeing Madison in vlogs on YouTube a few years ago and only saw her again yesterday on Rhett & Link's GMM (brave of you to go through all that! haha). After the show, I quickly pre-purchased this memoir (that she was on the show to promote) and was happy to both listen to it this first morning it's out and to leave the first Audible review!

Great story told by a wonderful person

Extremely eye opening. Told beautifully and gracefully. I glad she was able to tell her story and reveal parts of herself to everyone that didn’t know what she has truly been through.

Beautiful and emotional

It was such a well-written book. What she had gone through had brought me to tears. And the fact that she persists is inspiring.

I cried a lot listening to her talk about her painful moments and how she got through it.

ate it up

if ur a fan of madison i highly recommend this she get very vulnerable and truthful about different aspects of her like outside and inside of fame and does it wonderfully as someone with bpd as well it’s nice to hear an example of how differently this disorder affects different kinds of people i hope she writes more books in the future the only thing she could’ve worked on is i thought the journal prompts were surface level but had excellent voice and conviction with her reading and writing
