Publisher's summary

The best-selling book on heart disease, updated with the latest research and clinical findings on high-fat/ketogenic diets, sugar, genetics, and other factors.

Heart disease is the number-one killer. However, traditional heart disease protocols - with their emphasis on lowering cholesterol - have it all wrong. Emerging science is showing that cholesterol levels are a poor predictor of heart disease and that standard prescriptions for lowering it, such as ineffective low-fat/high-carb diets and serious, side-effect-causing statin drugs, obscure the real causes of heart disease. Even doctors at leading institutions have been misled for years based on creative reporting of research results from pharmaceutical companies intent on supporting the $31-billion-a-year cholesterol-lowering drug industry.

The Great Cholesterol Myth reveals the real culprits of heart disease, including inflammation, fibrinogen, triglycerides, homocysteine, belly fat, triglyceride to HDL ratios, and high glycemic levels.

Sad that there is so much misinformation out there in established medicine. I highly recommend everyone read this book.

Great information

Likes: Very professionally presented and listenable, well researched and cited, the use of anecdotes and mild humor kept interest, the information presented makes one want to take action immediately

Dislikes: Of all the audiobooks that deal with health issues, this one with all its citations and recommendations really needed an accompanying pdf, I was mildly annoyed to have to repeat parts so I could make notes. The authors were persuasive in mythbusting and breaking the dogma around cholesterol, diet, and heart disease (and attempting to undo the damage Ansel Keys unleashed with his faulty research)-- but -- they seemed to be as dogmatic in cherry picking research regarding body weight, heart disease, and longevity. The authors' weight bias comes through in accepting the "obesity epidemic" and "obesity causing ___" correlations as established facts, not theory, just as the cholesterol/heart disease theory became "fact that everyone knows," that was actually false when put to the test instead of accepted because it sounds right.

Logical and backed by evidence. Great book. Chapter on the pharma companies was amazing. Fun with statistics! I hope they keep updating.

We’ve been conned again

Boy has the pharma industry and sugar lobby messed with our health. I continue to be shocked by information that has been hidden from us. Read this and get back on track.

what they don't share...

really dry medical information.... preventative use of supplements was noteworthy....as well as how long the medical community has known what's really good and bad for our bodies.

What a breath of fresh air

The thing that I liked about this book, the most is that the authors went to the often quoted studies that are used to report the evidence for the use of statins and explored how each of those studies were wanting in validated proof
