Publisher's summary

A witty, romantic comedy of errors as former high school rivals McKenna and Henry inadvertently reunite in their hometown.

Hot-shot lawyer McKenna Keaton finds herself in hot water with her own law firm when she’s (falsely!) accused of embezzlement. Placed on unpaid leave, she suddenly finds herself with the free time to return home and attend her youngest sister’s wedding activities.

But it’s not all fun and games. Waiting back home is shy, nerdy Henry Blumenthal—McKenna’s high school rival for valedictorian who once took three hours to beat her at chess. Scratch that. He’s Hank Blume now, the famed documentarian, Durham, North Carolina’s, darling son, who has attained all his dreams and more. He also happens to look like he stepped out of an Eddie Bauer catalog.

Whereas McKenna is a disgraced workaholic from New York on unpaid leave, accused of a white-collar crime she would nevercommit, succumbing to panic attacks, watching her dreams unravel. At age thirty-eight—and destined by the family curse to die before she turns forty, apparently—it’s absolutely the wrong time to have a major crush on a man. Especially one who treasures his memories of McKenna as the girl Most Likely to Succeed.

“Pitch-perfect comedic timing, a relatable heroine, and a refreshing sweetness elevate this novel above the sea of modern rom-coms. The rare author who can make me laugh out loud, The Do-Over is Bethany Turner at her best.” —Lauren Layne, New York Times-bestselling author

Critic reviews

"Readers who haven't yet discovered the savvy, comedic rom-coms of award-winning author Bethany Turner are in for a treat with her latest second chance romance, The Do-Over . . . While romantic comedy may not be the genre for every reader, many will enjoy this light-hearted escape, especially anyone looking to drift away with a well-paced, feel-good story." Light listen

Had a fun story line that was easy to listen to. Was a good break from heavy stories that I listen to a lot.

Cute story! I loved Henry and McKenna

This rom-com is believable, well-written and has an interesting plot line. At the beginning I got a little irritated with the sound of the narrators voice. But I slowed the audio down just a notch and it was fine. I really enjoyed this book.

Eh. Made tolerable by good narration

Felt like I needed a bingo card for all of the random erroneous references/details… yet the two major life changing issues (the job and love story) were spared important details. Honestly, as a 40 year old myself- felt like the heroine was more likely to be 25 than almost 40. The story itself could have been successful - if plot holes and weird tangents were more polished and thought through.

Just a solid, good, sweet story

I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to. I wanted to be part of this family by the time I finished the book. The love story between the main characters is so sweet, and I love the lesson that it’s great to know who you are and what you want, but it’s also great to reevaluate what you want, make new decisions, and chase new dreams.

Wonderful and wholesome

4.5 stars. It’s a clean read, with a happy ending which I value immensely. A beginning storyline of mystery and a few subplots, including a sweet romance - that gradually becomes the main storyline - and a genealogical mystery. All loose ends are tied up in the end, so the reader isn’t left wondering what happened in any plot/story. I took a half a star off because there are some inconsistencies (ie Henry was sitting in an armchair in the first few sentences and then suddenly on the couch instead -without any mention of the move- and with the mention that “an hour later (he) was still on the couch” like he was never in the armchair in the first place). Things like that drive me nuts. Authors and editors should try better to keep things consistent. Aside from the inconsistencies, this was a great wholesome romance that I’d definitely recommend.

Sweet story

It’s a sweet story that is pleasant escapism. With much of the story taking place in Durham, North Carolina, I missed the sweet southern accent I expected to hear. The narrator was fine just not what I expected.

I do so like books that have a real feel to them..

Though the first part had me wondering where the story was going, the last 2/3 made it worth waiting. I love how real the thought life and conversations are. The family relationship struggles lend credence too. But best of all, I love the quips and flirting between the main characters. The author creates a fine "in love" tension without ever going too far!

Encore

I love this book. A wonderful story line. I’d love to see a sequel to the story. Each character could have their own. I’ll be watching.
