Publisher's summary

From the author of Identically Different comes a new look at nutritional health, showing us that breakthrough research on microbiomes - the microbes in our stomachs - could hold the key to healthy, balanced diets.

What should we eat? It's a simple and fundamental question that still bewilders us despite a seemingly infinite amount of available information on which foods are best for our bodies. Scientists, dieticians, and even governments regularly publish research on the dangers of too much fat and sugar as well as on the benefits of exercise, and yet the global obesity crisis is only worsening. Most diet plans prove to be only short-term solutions, and few strategies work for everyone. Why can one person eat a certain meal and gain weight while another eating the same meal drops pounds? Part of the truth lies in genetics, but more and more scientists are finding that the answer isn't so much what we put into our stomachs but rather the essential digestive microbes already in them.

Drawing on the latest science and pioneering research, The Diet Myth explores the hidden world of the microbiome and demystifies the common misconceptions about fat, calories, vitamins, and nutrients. Dr. Tim Spector shows us that only by understanding what makes our own personal microbes tick and interact can we overcome the confusion of modern nutrition, allowing us to regain natural balance in our bodies. Mixing cutting-edge discoveries, illuminating science, and his own case studies, Spector reveals why we should abandon fads and instead embrace diversity for a balanced diet, a healthy stomach, and a nourished body.

Awesome information

This book was very informative. I’m going to be looking into the gut project myself. It’s a must read.

One diet does not fit all!

I’ve been studying nutrition for years (literally decades!) and found this book remarkable and more trustworthy than any other I’ve read. I am a personal trainer/nutrition coach and I cannot wait to have my gut microbiome tested to find out what foods work best for me so I can then recommend the process to to my family, friends and clients!

I’ve ordered the hard copy of this book and have his later book “Spoonfed” to use for reference. I just sent a copy of this book to my mom and my sister and have recommended to at least a dozen others with more recommendations to come!

Thank you so much Dr. Spector!

fascinating, interesting

Plenty of interesting and actionable ideas shared in a largely scientific way. I appreciate the author seems to focus on sharing the current state of the science in a low biased, candid way. Shortcomings are highlighted. Opinions are clearly labeled as such.
Bonus: the research studies and anecdotes are presented in an entertaining way, and the healthy dose of British humor keeps making me smile.
This has already influenced a change in my nutrition to act on the ideas shared here. Excited to see how acting on the learning from this book affects my health!

Solid Perspective by an Non-American Practitioner

This is not your typical American Medical Association approved doctor of Medicine, but an actively engaged, interested working man from the isles of Great Britain. It's amazing how a different perspective can completely change how something is understood. It's incredible how the population you serve gives opportunity a wider range of thought in diet and in eating.

No foods are excluded, and there are chapters on all the food groups, and chocolate, coffee, alcohol, tea, even vitamin supplements are given space and consideration. Dietary advice from America, Australia, even Africa is given. Antibiotics are discussed in detail, and chronic use, with all the dangers and side effects are included.

My favorite points were how sanitary conditions effect health. Food borne illness and chronic infection can stunt growth and development, but a sterile food supply causes allergies and lowered immunity. Much space is also given to the health of your gut biomome and the health of yourself and your children. Various diets are explored, and the benefits and disadvantages are discussed. Cheese and wine from France, and the Frenchman's health risks, versus similar diets further north, and the amount of vegetables and fruit eaten in different countries feature as examples to demonstrate studies.

The narrator was not bad. Because I have now seen some of the other books he has narrated, I refuse to recommend him. His work here was good enough, but, I have a personal dislike for some of the subject matter which he has narrated, so I will never listen to annother book read by him.

Common sense seems to be the watchword

The narrator is fantastic. The book has occasional humor that I enjoyed. In the end, you need to eat with common sense. Not rely on one type of food all the time. Change what you eat to give your microbes some variety. Be careful of what you ingest.
Mostly I learned that we should dislike food producers and their government subsidies. Making money at the expense of people’s health. What a racket.
