Good information terrible writing

It seems the author took a list of dates and facts and wrote in sentences without knowing the slightest thing about his subject.

Ex “ by establishing a constitution, Colombia became a constitutional republic . “ etc .

Narrator’s pronunciations are catastrophic

Nice, comprehensive summary of each country’s history. However, the pronunciations are SO egregious that it distracts from the story.

An Excellent Introduction to South America

At just over 12 hours of [decent] narration, you only get about 1 hour for each country: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guianas, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. While there isn't much depth for any one country, you do get a solid summary of each, starting with a quick introduction before walking through pre-colonial history on to modern times with just enough detail to differentiate each country ... and for somebody like me who knows very little about the history of South America outside of the unit on the conquistadors in my High School history class ... I would recommend this book without reservation.

I was given this free advance listener copy (ALC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Dreadful

Dreadfully written and badly read. The text is full of grammar, vocabulary and factual error (“Castilian is a dialect of the Spanish language spoken in the region of Castile”). I confess I was unable to go on listening past the Colombia chapters. The beginning is more or less bearable, but around the Chile chapters (absurdly pronounced Chilé by the reader) the book descends into what reminds me of an ignorant teenager’s history exam: a bunch of incoherent sentences containing loose and wrong facts strung together into an incomprehensible mess! Do not waste a credit on this, even if, like me you are very interested in the subject matter.

Extremely Comprehensive & Interestingly Narrated!

The “Complete History of South America” is truly a complete, well-written history for all of South America, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, The Guianas/Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Additionally, the author also elaborates on significant influences within each country, including Machu Picchu, The Inca Empire, and Simon Bolivar.

The narration is wonderful and provides the perfect balance between informative and interesting information. I appreciated the comprehensive history, some of which dated back to AD/BC. I also enjoyed the background information about the first explorers and settlers, which provided helpful imagery. Moreover, the author also provided an excellent representation of how the land’s indigenous people responded to meeting the new explorers and how these interactions influenced the country’s identity. This perspective is not always represented in history books, and if it is, it is often misrepresented or missing vital information to facilitate visualization or empathy.

I recommend this book for any readers interested in the history of South America or students researching South America. There is enough information to understand the history and how it shaped today’s version of each country. For instance, there were two attempts to settle Buenos Aires, the second of which was an exciting feat, making Buenos Aires an essential part of Argentina’s history and is still very much relevant today as the capital.

The book is conveniently separated into larger sections, each consisting of smaller chapters for each country within South America. Each section covers a substantial amount of information for each country and provides a comprehensive understanding of the entire history of the countries. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audiobook and would recommend you give it a go!

just awful

it is clear that most of this was just pulled together from government web pages lauding whatever government was in power in a country at that moment.
