David Robbins has published twenty books, including travel, history, biography, fiction and socio-political analysis. He won South Africa's coveted CNA literary award in 1986 for his second published book, and most recently (2010) he has received a Lifetime Achievement Literary Award from the South African Ministry of Arts and Culture. He began writing short stories in his teens, publishing for the first time at age 19. His breakthrough came with travel writing. He has written a trilogy of South African travel books which charts the transformation of South Africa from an apartheid state to democracy and beyond. He has also travelled widely in Africa and written extensively about the continent. He is currently travelling in the ancient world, from Ethiopia and the Middle East to India and the Malaysian peninsular and finally to the Indonesian islands and northwest Australia. A major book will emerge from these excursions. He is an accomplished short fiction writer, having thus far published three collections, two set in South Africa, and one dealing with South Africans living in Scotland. When he’s not writing, he works as editorial adviser at Porcupine Press, a small but highly active independent publishing house in Johannesburg. And when he’s neither writing nor advising, he relaxes with his wife Gail with whom he has spent the past thirty-eight years. He reads and watches movies and listens to (largely) classical music. Although he’s getting old, he still travels and he still writes.
