Story
Thelma Foy, a jeweler with the Second Sight in iron-bedecked 1890s New Orleans, wasn't expecting to be caught in a faery conflict. Tam can see through the glamours faeries wear to hide themselves from mortals, but if her secret were revealed, the fey would steal her eyes, her life, or her freedom. So, Tam doesn't respond when they trail thorn-crusted fingertips through her hair at the French Market or when the Dark King sings along with her in the bayou. But when the Dark King, Irial, rescues her, Tam must confront everything she thought she knew about faeries, men, and love.

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Just hours after humans are born, the gods take what little power we have. In return, they protect our borders from the vicious, merciless fae. The humans who manage to keep their power are known as the corrupt. And they are burned. When my forbidden power is discovered, I’m forced to flee my tiny village and the life I adore. To survive, I make a desperate bargain with the mercenary who abandoned me at my weakest moment. Our deal is simple: I’ll help him and his mysterious friends sneak into the city, and he’ll help me learn to wield the strange, dark power I’ve always kept hidden.

Publisher's summary
Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in the mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty - especially if they learn of her Sight - and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.
Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries.
Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.
Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention.
But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost - regardless of her plans or desires.
Suddenly, none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything.
Faerie intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr's stunning 21st-century faery tale.
Critic reviews
"The fantasy of being pursued by two young men is alluring in itself, but when one is a pierced and tattooed sexy outsider and the other is a blindingly beautiful King of Faery, how much better can it get?" ( The Washington Post's Book World)

Story
Isabelle should be blissfully happy - she's about to win the handsome prince. Except Isabelle isn't the beautiful girl who lost the glass slipper and captured the prince's heart. She's the ugly stepsister who cut off her toes to fit into Cinderella's shoe...which is now filling with blood. Isabelle cut away pieces of herself in order to become pretty. Sweet. More like Cinderella. But that only made her mean, jealous, and hollow. Now she has a chance to alter her destiny and prove what ugly stepsisters have always known: it takes more than heartache to break a girl.

Better than expected
I actually did not want to like this book because there are so many in the series :) But after just a few pages,I was hooked. Parts of the story were predictable, but to get to those points the story was a lot of fun. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the summer fae in the sun beams that surround them.
It looks like each book in the series involves different characters, so I don't know if you need to read one after the other right away, which would make reading the series easie

Lovely ;)
I would recommend this book (series) to most adults who love the fantasy genre. The mixing of Faery in every day life is something I enjoyed a whole lot. The narration was to be desired slightly. However I know the rest of the series has a male narrator and he is much better.

Good but not great.
I struggled to get into the book. The main character had plenty of external conflicts and resulting internal conflicts, but I didn't walk away having read the book and feeling connected to her or understanding who she is. Nevertheless, the story did become more intriguing as it went on and I did like the non-cliche, balanced ending. I'm willing to give Ink Exchange, the second book, a chance.

Terrible narrating.
That narrator though.... Yuck!!!
I got through this audible only because I paid for the book and have a hard time walking away from an unfinished book. At this point, I'm undecided if I'll even continue with the series.
The story is ok. It was the narrator that ruined the whole experience. She smacked her lips or on gum the entire time. It was beyond irritating. Her extreme long pauses weren't necessary. I could hear every swallow she did. I even heard rumblings like a stomach growling at one point. It made listening to this book very hard.
The plus side to continuing the series? It's a different narrator.
