2013 Winner—Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award—Grand Prize and Young Adult Fiction Winner.

When Kate Pierce-Keller’s grandmother gives her a strange blue medallion and speaks of time travel, sixteen-year-old Kate assumes the old woman is delusional. But it all becomes horrifyingly real when a murder in the past destroys the foundation of Kate’s present-day life. Suddenly, that medallion is the only thing protecting Kate from blinking out of existence.

Kate learns that the 1893 killing is part of something much more sinister, and her genetic ability to time travel makes Kate the only one who can fix the future. Risking everything, she travels back in time to the Chicago World’s Fair to try to prevent the murder and the chain of events that follows.

Changing the timeline comes with a personal cost—if Kate succeeds, the boy she loves will have no memory of her existence. And regardless of her motives, does Kate have the right to manipulate the fate of the entire world?

Teen Romance with Time Travel

I have attempted to listen to this book four times because some of the ideas are good but the romance is the focus of the book, and time travel takes a back seat. The main character, Kate, is a seventeen year old who behaves like a not-too-bright fifteen year old. Kate prepares for a month to go back in time but never bothers to learn the currency or how much she should pay for items. She constantly looks for help from the male characters in the book, and so shows little self-reliance. With some character development, and world building, this could have been a good series, but it falls short.

Wibbly-wobbly Timey-wimey Ball of Stuff

Fans of time-travel adventures will find plenty to like in Timebound. The star of the show is Kate Pierce, who accidentally discovers her family's legacy as Historians - a group of people who study history firsthand thanks to some time-jumping technology. When an evil cult disrupts her ancestry, she'll have to travel back in time and fix what went wrong before she gets erased from existence, aka "pulling a Marty McFly." Along the way she gets help from her temporally displaced grandmother, her research assistant, and a charming young man named Trey...who won't remember her if she succeeds.

The plot is interesting, and gets somewhat complicated in the way that well-written time travel stories tend to do. The characters have depth, the stakes feel appropriately dramatic, and Walker does a good job setting up a larger conflict to be covered in the sequels. I took off one star because, while I enjoyed the story, it felt like it took a while to really get going. That's the only real issue I had with this book, however, and I'll definitely be checking out the sequels.

The reader did a fine job,l. She sounded lively enough to keep me interested, and she gave each character a distinct enough voice that I could always tell who was speaking.

Recommended.

So good

I absolutely loved this book. Halfway through I started to panic, hoping it was a series. I am so happy it is. Starting the second book as soon as I finish posting this review.

Weird character decisions.

The story had a lo of promise, but the character development just wasn’t there. It’s like the author didn’t really know her characters because often she would have the characters make choices that didn’t seem consistent with who the characters were. Rather she would just have them make choices that seemed to possibly create the most “suspense” for the situation. This is a great example of why it’s so important for an author to really know the characters, otherwise the author just ends up writing a whole bunch of “scenes,” rather than a coherent story with relatable characters. All in all, the premise of the story was intriguing, but the execution was really disappointing.

Cool time travel!

I have a love hate relationship with time travel books. Some, I can hardly keep up with, and others just don't add up. Then there are books like this, they make everything tie together beautifully and craftily.
