Publisher's summary

Mary Ingles was 23, happily married, and pregnant with her third child when Shawnee Indians invaded her peaceful Virginia settlement in 1755 and kidnapped her, leaving behind a bloody massacre. For months they held her captive. But nothing could imprison her spirit.

With the rushing Ohio River as her guide, Mary Ingles walked one thousand miles through an untamed wilderness no white woman had ever seen. Her story lives on - extraordinary testimony to the indomitable strength of one pioneer woman who risked her life to return to her own people.

SPELLBINDING!

Seems very unlikely that this story could have happened as written, however it certainly is a testimony to human endurance and determination. The story captured our attention from beginning to the very end – and I wouldn't mind listening to it again as we listened in broken segments over several weeks. The narrator was very easy to understand.

This is a wonderful capture of the time and history. The author did a fantastic job in his capture the events of that era

Long, but gripping

Any additional comments?

Amazing story, especially when we learned it is based on a true story. This is a must read! A bit gruesome but something we all need to understand.

Inspiring

This is an inspiring story, even if it is necessarily somewhat fictionalized. My only complaint is that a male reader was chosen. David Drummond did a good job, but as most of the dialog was between women, a female narrator would've been a better choice.

One of the Best ever

I love history based fiction and have read this book several times. This Audible version is as enjoyable as the paper book. I had a stroke a few years ago and have difficulty with reading skills now. Audible has become a real friend.

Lots of detail

If you enjoy historical fiction you'll like this. There's a couple sections where there was almost too much detail and felt a little drug out, but overall it was an interesting story.

Excellent story, love this author

I loved the repetition of struggle, always described differently. What great storytelling. James Alexander Thom is one of my favorite authors and I love how he weaves a story from historical events.

Endurance

I thought the narrator did a nice job with accents. It is amazing what the human body can endure/accomplish if it is allowed. It is difficult to imagine in this age of highways and such, a person making such a trek though wilderness

Extremely powerful!

This book changed me. I felt the pacing was wonderful and the performance outstanding. I think about this survival story almost every day in some fashion. I highly recommend reading it, though it's very difficult emotionally in many areas.

Drama and Anticipation

What a great story! This is the story of Mary Ingles who was captured by Shawnee Indians around 1750. Without giving anything away, she escapes and follows the New River home to West Virginia some 500 miles on foot in winter without supplies. A great tale of perseverance, love and determination with lots of action. I was so surprised at the end when listening to the Author's Note to learn that this was (basically) a true story. Warning - there are some very violent, detailed descriptions of Indian attacks on settlers that will be too gruesome for some readers.
