Publisher's summary

In a nation on the brink of war, a young art student's star-crossed love begins to bloom in the first book of the New York Times best-selling epic fantasy trilogy by award-winning author Laini Taylor.

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages—not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

Any additional comments?

Wow! I've had this book in my Audible library for ages and can't believe I only listened to it now! The world building is a-MAZ-ing!!! The characters are engaging and the love story is filled of adolescent angst. Such a fresh and unique story. Off to listen to the second book...

A beautiful tale!

The top rated negative reviews pan this book because the second half is 'just flashbacks' and pointless to the story. HUH?

The book may not be for everyone, but the second half feels logical to the whole. I thoroughly enjoyed the author's scene weaving language and could imagine the surroundings in each scene. Some of the character interplay may be simplified, but they are believeable.

Great story.

The novel is well written, loved the concept of the story and I really liked the romance between the angel and karue. I understand fully the two worlds and I think that the story is unique. would recommend.

Not amusing

A heterosexual YA romance novel disguised as fantasy. I would prefer if these things had a list of themes on them. I detest straight people's romances.

Perfection

This is a re-read ...erm.. listen for me. It is one of my absolute favorite series from one of my all time favorite authors so this fangirl review is a touch biased but now I can add favorite narrator to that list. I loved reading this series but I enjoyed it even more when Mrs. Hvam read it to me. She does distinct voices so seamlessly that I never questioned whose head we were inside at any given moment. She managed to take a much beloved book and make it even more special and THAT is incredibly impressive to me.

Laini Taylor is a master wordsmith that can build worlds and characters that will take your breath away. I have even been known to clutch the book to my chest and just bask in the glory of her prose.

I can't reccomend this audiobook/series highly enough!! It is the perfect blend of Fantasy with a demure touch of Romance. Check this out and I'm almost certain that when it's over it will be in your Favorites list as well.
