Publisher's summary

Nothing spoils a date quite like murder.

Star’s past due for some fun, and a witchy Halloween bash seems just the thing. She’s even got a hot date. But things cool down fast when a body surfaces. Star’s on a mission to find the culprit...and just maybe get back to that date.

Haunted Halloween Party Hijinks

So I will say noticing the shortness of all these volumes I feel like it would have made way more sense to just sell the Night Shift Witch Series as a single collection. In fact as of this review (January 2022) you can get the entire series on Kindle for under a dollar. This was a fun date night story with our lead Star and Ben at a Halloween party where both witches and normies intermingle. It is not long before a dead witch guest is found and mysterious ghost behavior starts to set things awry. This was a super quick all in one location story that was silly and fun and did manage to build on the politics of the weird justice system of the magical world and the way non-magical folks are thought of. There is a level of nonchalance about murder but that I think is also setting a tone for revealing how the magical world views these events and how this is in deep contrast to those without magical abilities. I also enjoyed seeing some of the drama and interpersonal dynamics between the witches themselves, this book was not short on strong personalities. However I will say this story did feel different from the last volume did and am curious to see how the next two volumes in the series currently available pan out. While the first story was a more wide range world building investigation with many moving parts, this story felt like old school one act murder mystery play that takes place in one room with set cast of characters. Enjoyable but so much shorter than the first. I think this world and the characters interest me so much I am hungry for more to sink my teeth into and hope the next in the series will deliver just that. For those who like book one I think you will enjoy but be left wanting due to the slight change up and short length, and again feels needless to have to purchase everyone of these separately.
