Publisher's summary

War has come to the Willful Institute. It has come to the first realm.

For years Alva has trained, developed weapons, and tactics never seen in the 10 realms. Now Alva moves in the background, supporting the Adventurer's Guild. No band of fighters, no sect looking to gain individual honors.

The armies of Alva were forged together in Alva dungeon.

Tempered in body, in mind, in mana. Supported by Alvan traders, crafters, they reclaimed the lost floors of their home. They captured Vuzgal and defended it in the vicious battlefield realm.

Now Alva is going to war. Their abilities, their skills tested head on. One individual is strong. A nation focused, a nation brought together for a single goal. It is something that could shake the very foundations of the ten realms. A beast stirs in the Beast Mountain Range, raising their eyes to the higher realms. It is time Erik and Rugrat stepped out of the shadows.

Intense!

This book I definitely found to be more Intense than the others. With some pretty surprising twists in it.
I keep running into spoilers trying to write this review. I will say this since people have very likely read/heard previous books. I found this one to be the heaviest book emotional wise.

good series

I like the series up to this point.

great system.awesome story.
but listening to it is hard because other than 3-4 characters from the first 2 books all the names start sounding the same. when your bouncing back and forth between war fronts and ally and enemy point of veiw it gets very disorienting.
A single sentence when the readers point of veiw shifts from Alva to Vuzgow to Kings Hill etc. would clean this up. Im sure the author knows where these people are but finding out a 20 minutes into a chapter that X went from location 1a to 3y when The character of the chapter was in 2b last time you had a location for them is rough. especailly if its been 2 books or more since you even heard that places name.
it distracts from the story.
annoying but tollerable. im still going to take a break from the series before re reading it from book one. Ill bring a notebook to try to keep better track of thing next time though.

Such a satisfying end

The preparation, the planning, the deaths oh boy. I can already imagine the shellshock those have.

More thrilling & moving storytelling

I'm glad to finally see reluctant city lords Eric & Rugrat and their Alvin forces show the full range of all their leveling up against scary new threats. They have all come so far and accomplished so much that, of course, the unwanted attention of higher level forces is attracted. leading to devastating, consequences for all. But I may not forgive Michael Chatfield for the fate of one valiant hero that I looked forward to seeing grow more powerful.

the voices are too similar

I tended to get lost in who's side the book was on rugratc and Eric or the willful institute or the seventh realm riders eventually someone would say something to get me back on track but I'd feel lost for a while before I got whose side I was hearing.

It's just what I love from this genre

Economy, espionage, war, cities, crafting, enchanting, a magic redneck. lots of war and carnage, I miss the old voice actor tho.

About time the fight got real.

Seriously a truly strong group, goes after our favorite dungeon lords. There pushed to the limits. No hold bars, all or nothing. Losses stack up and favorites die. Will this crush our dear Eric and Rugrat or forge the steel of their souls?

Keeps Getting Better

I am not sure what's happening. I have so grown accustomed to trope that all sequels suck. This series just keeps getting better. Chatfield keeps the the foundations that made us fall in love with this universe in the first place: family, loyalty and lot's of throw down badass fighting.
And yet he continues to provide the characters with depth and motivations that make they real. These novels are making me connect and feel with the people, places, trials and tribulations.
Honestly, great job. As long as Chatfield chooses to keep turning these out I will keep showing up, money in hand.

got me crying in the club right now.

SEMI SPOILER

Michael Chatfield has me crying in the club due to the war and the losses our Main characters had to witness. the narrator grew on me and in my honest opinion did a better job than the original portraying the different characters and their emotions. I'm excited to listen to the next book and can't wait already.
