Publisher's summary
Now Beattie has written a follow-up volume, The New Codependency, which clears up misconceptions about codependency, identifies how codependent behavior has changed, and provides a new generation with a road map to wellness.
The question remains: What is and what isn't codependency? Beattie here reminds us that much of codependency is normal behavior. It's about crossing lines. There are times we do too much, care too much, feel too little, or overly engage. Feeling resentment after giving is not the same as heartfelt generosity. Narcissism and self-love, enabling and nurturing, and controlling and setting boundaries are not interchangeable terms.
In The New Codependency, Beattie explores these differences, effectively invoking her own inspiring story and those of others, to empower us to step out of the victim role forever. Codependency, she shows, is not an illness but rather a series of behaviors that once broken down and analyzed can be successfully combated.
Each section offers an overview of and a series of activities pertaining to a particular behavior - caretaking, controlling, manipulation, denial, repression, etc. - enabling us to personalize our own step-by-step guide to wellness. These sections, in conjunction with a series of tests allowing us to assess the level of our codependent behavior, demonstrate that while it may not seem possible now, we have the power to take care of ourselves, no matter what we are experiencing.
Punctuated with Beattie's renowned candor and intuitive wisdom, The New Codependency is an owner's manual to learnin...

Story
Pia Mellody creates a framework for identifying codependent thinking, emotions and behaviour and provides an effective approach to recovery. Mellody sets forth five primary adult symptoms of this crippling condition, then traces their origin to emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical and sexual abuses that occur in childhood. Central to Mellody's approach is the concept that the codependent adult's injured inner child needs healing.

Are You Codependent?
I was in a 30+ year codependent relationship. I didn't realize how codependent I was until I read this book. The chapters and the exercises have taught me how overcome this behavior, how to recognize it in others, and how to set boundaries. I even purchased the paperback so I could follow along better.

Must listen for anyone!
Recognition of what you do to bring the life you are tired of back to you over and over again is half the battle. This book is an easy listen, but will make you get real with yourself and see things in an entirely new light. I identified personally with entirely too many of the stories. This book helped me step back, and step forward in a new way.

Codeoendency
Would you try another book from Melody Beattie and/or Lorna Raver?
dont like the narrator. It just sounds wrong. Not convincing. Need a storyteller that makes the subject matter sound relevant not rehearsed.
Would you be willing to try another book from Melody Beattie? Why or why not?
yes, a book, because of the lessons, it is hard to stop while listening. I think she is doing important work, groundbreaking in the 70's
How could the performance have been better?
more vocal inflections, or maybe not so bright and up at all times
Did The New Codependency inspire you to do anything?
yes, did out my original copy and wonder why I paid for the same old information but without the update on how well her life is now that she is out, great life update..go team Melogy

Brilliant- a must-have for every co-dependent!
What a brilliant book! I hung on to every word, as
clearly the author has done it again with her brilliant guidance on what is a very painful, adaptation: co-dependence. Melodie is truly a world expert, who wrote yet another classic. So many people suffer from their own co-dependence, and that of others, and without the right help, life can be unmanageable. Please get this book, if you are searching for valuable, reliable information and suggestions that work! One of my favorites: catch and release all difficult feelings, and what is your excessive guilt really about? Did I say that I love this book, and highly recommend it? :)
