Publisher's Summary

Why, despite our state-of-the-art medical technology, does the United States have among the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the industrialized world? Why do pregnant women who are planning to breastfeed receive "free" samples of infant formula from American obstetricians? Why are American newborns given a vaccine at birth against hepatitis B, a sexually transmitted disease? The Business of Baby, an eye-opening work of investigative journalism, exposes how current cultural practices during pregnancy, childbirth, and the first year of a baby's life, are not based on the best evidence or the most modern science. Rather, as the audiobook reveals, current cultural practices reflect how American moms and their babies are being undermined by corporate interests. An illuminating combination of meticulous research and in-depth interviews with parents, doctors, midwives, nurses, health care administrators, and scientists, Margulis's impassioned and eloquent critique is shocking, groundbreaking, and revelatory. The Business of Baby arms parents with the information they need to make informed decisions about their own health and the health of their infants.

    "very informative!"

This book was full of studies and facts to back up its claim. worthwhile to anyone interested in the topic. my only criticism is the over emphasis on doctors and nurses emotional reactions as a type of evidence to support the authors point of view.

"Worth a read but with some skepticism."

The author uses many parental stories and financial figures to induce fear and distrust in the current "American" health care system and capitalist society. I enjoyed this take on viewing pregnancy and parenting from the other side of the coin but as a Canadian I found it a bit over the top. Definitely worth a read to consider all the options and pros and cons behind the choices you make while pregnant and caring for your baby.

    "Great content, but long"

I really enjoyed the content of this book. I did feel at times the writer reiterated many points from earlier in the book. I feel like the book could've been a lot shorter. But still worth the read.

"The best book for alternative options"

This book goes where most other books do not. It gives facts and tells you alternatives. I love this book and feel much more informed. You can still do your research and make your own opinions but this gives the side that is much less talked about. This book and another book Expecting Better both laid out some realities that are very much over looked in the traditional baby books. Be informed and don't be dropped by the large companies, hospitals and doctors who have little time to spend with you and your little one.

"Terrible book not backed up by fact"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who are into conspiracy theories and anecdotes.

What was most disappointing about Jennifer Margulis’s story?

As a pregnant woman reading this book, I felt like the author was trying to scare the crap out of me without providing much evidence. Moral of the story, according to the author, is doctors are bad and mothers can do everything by themselves. It was so terrible I couldn't finish the book, as I felt my head was being filled with misinformation and garbage

What aspect of Rebecca Jenkins’s performance would you have changed?

    N/A

What character would you cut from The Business of Baby?

    N/A

    "Really biased delivery of info"
Would you ever listen to anything by Jennifer Margulis again?

    No

Have you listened to any of Rebecca Jenkins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No, but she was fine.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Mislead

    Any additional comments?

The author at one point suggests that ultrasounds could be causing autism, based on one persons hypothesis and then later on suggests that vaccinations could be causing autism. I'm sorry but you can't have it both ways. There was some info in here that was good, but I can't tell what is based in truth, or just the authors opinion. Try "Expecting Better" instead.
