Publisher's summary

In 1994, Driven to Distraction sparked a revolution in our understanding of attention deficit disorder. Now a second revolution is under way in the approach to ADD, and the news is great. Drug therapies, our understanding of the role of diet and exercise, even the way we define the disorder, all are changing radically. And doctors are realizing that millions of adults suffer from this condition, though the vast majority of them remain undiagnosed and untreated. In this new book, Drs. Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey build on the breakthroughs of Driven to Distraction to offer a comprehensive and entirely up-to-date guide to living a successful life with ADD.

As Hallowell and Ratey point out, "attention deficit disorder" is a highly misleading description of an intriguing kind of mind. Original, charismatic, energetic, often brilliant, people with ADD have extraordinary talents and gifts embedded in their highly charged but easily distracted minds. Tailored expressly to ADD learning styles and attention spans, Delivered from Distraction provides accessible, engaging discussions of every aspect of the condition, from diagnosis to finding the proper treatment regime. Inside you'll discover:

  • whether ADD runs in families
  • the links between ADD and other conditions
  • how people with ADD can free up their inner talents and strengths
  • the new drugs and how they work, and why they're not for everyone
  • sexual problems associated with ADD and how to resolve them
  • strategies for dealing with procrastination, clutter, and chronic forgetfulness

ADD is a trait, it only becomes a disorder when it impairs your life. Featuring gripping profiles of patients with ADD who have triumphed, Delivered from Distraction is a wise, loving guide to releasing the positive energy that all people with ADD hold inside. If you have ADD or care about someone who does, this is the book you must read.

A great listen chock full of sage advice

Would you listen to Delivered From Distraction again? Why?

Absolutely. It's non-fiction, so the re-listen-ability may drop a bit, but there was so much helpful information that I will definitely listen to it again.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Delivered From Distraction?

The stories were some of the best parts. One woman had spent her whole life struggling with ADD, only to discover that with help she could overcome it and have a better life.

Any additional comments?

At first, I thought it was read by the author, as their voices sort of sound the same. Dan Cashman was able to bring a lot of life to a non-fiction book, and it was very enjoyable.

Wonderful material

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I will recommend this book to every person I know and many I will meet.

What did you learn from Delivered From Distraction that you would use in your daily life?

I learned a great many things about my situation and the oulets to help me cope and grow a s aperson.

Any additional comments?

Whisper-sync does not seem to work. Also, the only problem with this recording is that the chapters are improperly titled. For someone with ADD this is almost a deal breaker. It forced me to listen to the entire book as opposed to jumping around to areas I need first.

I´m an adult ADD I had my diagnosis many years ago I thougt I knew a lot about my disorder, but I didn´t know how to deal with it´s negative aspects, which I now starting to do.

Excellent but chapters don’t match

A must have for those with or close to someone with ADHD. Finding good, useful help is difficult and most therapists are ill-equipped to treat ADHD, especially in adults. This book helps give a solid foundational understanding of the symptoms as well as the way to begin to tackle one’s ADHD treatment plan

Such a relief

This was a great book. I heard about myself and my son in every chapter. It gave me hope for the both of us. The only thing i would change is having the chapters in the book coincide with the chapters on audible. I like to get hard copies of books i enjoyed listening to but it would be hard to find places I’ve bookmarked in audible in the actual book The content and performance were great. I truly appreciate this book.

Validating and extremely helpful

As an adult with ADD I related with everything in this book and feel encouraged to live my best life even with my differently functioning brain. it's really easy to feel bad about being different and this book made me ready to take charge of my challenges while celebrating and building on my strengths. I'm going to listen to it again so I am sure to internalize and apply the knowledge in this book.

Terrific Book - Terrific Narrator

What did you love best about Delivered From Distraction?

This book is amazing because the psychiatrist who wrote it has ADD. The subjects it touches upon are very diverse. It's kind of a survival guide/pep talk for people with ADD. He covers a lot of bases, and does so with humor and compassion. I really needed this book. On top of that, the narrator is my favorite out of any audiobook I've listened to. His voice is so warm and paternal. The whole experience was like being wrapped in a warm blanket.
