Publisher's summary

An unparalleled exploration of the mysteries underlying women's sexuality that rivals the culture-shifting Kinsey Report, from two of America's leading research psychologists.

Do women have sex simply to reproduce or display their affection? When University of Texas at Austin clinical psychologist Cindy M. Meston and evolutionary psychologist David M. Buss joined forces to investigate the underlying sexual motivations of women, what they found astonished them.

Through the voices of real women, Meston and Buss reveal the motivations that guide women's sexual decisions and explain the deep-seated psychology and biology that often unwittingly drive women's desires - sometimes in pursuit of health or pleasure, or sometimes for darker, disturbing reasons that a woman may not fully recognize. Drawing on more than a thousand intensive interviews conducted solely for the book, as well as their pioneering research on physiological response and evolutionary emotions, Why Women Have Sex uncovers an amazingly complex and nuanced portrait of female sexuality. They delve into the use of sex as a defensive tactic against a mate's infidelity (protection), as a ploy to boost self-confidence (status), as a barter for gifts or household chores (resource acquisition), or as a cure for a migraine headache (medication).

Why Women Have Sex stands as the richest and deepest psychological understanding of female sexuality yet achieved and promises to inform every woman's (and her partner's) awareness of her relationship to sex and her sexuality.

A must listen to for MEN

I’ve always wondered all the reasons why women have sex, I certainly was aware of quite a few of them and this book expanded my knowledge and will greatly help me in future relationships.

Wonderfully done using real science!

I really appreciated this book and helps me get a better perspective on my personal relationships with women, and I believe it helped me improve those relationships on both sides.

Earth girls are easy

I wanted to know about females viewpoint on sex. I feel disgusted how the female Mind views sex. But I've taken this book to heart. I've broken up with my girlfriend and am currently having sex with more than one partner as now I know women are shallow and hold no value towards sex. I can say that this book was a godsend. I'm finally free of wanting sex and am now demanding it in exchange for time and company. To the authors, On behalf of all men I salute you. Semper fi

WOW

Any additional comments?

Excellent, excellent book. I wish I had read this book before I got married. It's sort of like reading your wife or girlfriend's Cosmo when no one is looking.

Nothing has ever gotten me closer to understanding the behavior and feelings of women until this book. Although it is written about why women have sex (literally), there is so much here that explains so many behaviors.

I will never understand my wife completely. But this book answers (between the lines) a lof of "why" questions about her behavior and motivations. I admit I have used the information to benefit myself - but only because I understand and can adequately address her needs better. In that respect, she has benefitted equally.

A one-of-a-kind great book.

Any additional comments?

A surprisingly good book. Well-researched with lots of entertaining personal stories. No new-age special butterfly nonsense and no hard pick-up-artist gimmicks, just good data. My only complaint might be that the data used are not comprehensive in scope and omit or undervalue certain cultures.

Why anyone would want to listen to this?

I am disappointed with this title. Yes it was interesting and it discussed some interesting topics such as women and sex but overall, this book did not live up to the hype at all and in fact there were some parts that made me cringe altogether. The discussions on rape, three ways and cheating nearly made me want to stop listening the book several times. What exactly does the topic of rape have to do with Why Women Have Sex? Not quite what I was looking for there. As for the narration, I admit the narrators actually do a really good job but the content isn't really worth the time to listen anyway.
