Publisher's summary

They are hunting us.

In this sweeping, threaded narrative of the global phenomenon known as the Vampire Wars, mankind is unwittingly infected by a millennia-old bacteria unknowingly exhumed by a scientific expedition in Antarctica. Now, in some rare cases, a person’s so-called junk DNA becomes activated. Depending on their racial and ethnic heritage, they begin to manifest one of the many diverse forms of the "others" that are the true basis for the legends of supernatural creatures. These aren’t your usual vampires and werewolves - it goes much deeper than that.

Conceived by Jonathan Maberry, V Wars features stories from various frontlines as reported by such contributors as Nancy Holder, Yvonne Navarro, James A. Moore, Gregory Frost, John Everson, Keith R. A. DeCandido, and Scott Nicholson - as well as Maberry himself, of course. The result is a compelling series of tales that creates a unique chronicle of mankind’s response to this sudden, hidden threat to humanity.

Interesting take on the Vamp and WW genre

if you enjoy stories about vampires and werewolves, you will want to buy this book. It's not a sparkly vamp tail but a contribution from several writers of what would happen if some humans started to evolve into such beings and how those not transformed would react.
All the stories told were engrossing and each narrator gave a fantastic performance.

Suprised

Didn't think much of this and was amazed and enthralled with the scope of stories, folklore and how in-depth the authors took to the personal lives of their characters

Good book, but...

Good book. Hated the Big John story though. The performance of it was subpar at best.

Mixed bag.

Some of the readers are better than others, but overall it's a very interesting concept. I like the format.

Loved Every Moment!

It was a little confusing a first trying to keep track of every character time jump. However, because it had multiple people reading it, you catch on faster and feel like each character comes to life and reveals the story uniquely. The accents are more accurate I think as well.

Vampires are people too!

This first volume of the series chronicles the disastrous effects of a bacteria, unleashed by an Antarctic expedition, which interacts with the population’s “junk” DNA. The changes in the infected are based on their racial and ethnic heritage, resulting in the “changed” turning into paranormal creatures of legendary folklore, i.e. vampires and werewolves. The owner of this theory is professor Luther Swan. We are then introduced to the people of Saos, Arizona who will be permanent characters throughout the series. This includes Moony, the Border Patrol Agent who as a teenager was raped and became pregnant. As the story continues, more and more victims appear across the country, and we get several of their stories. More and more authorities become involved until the White House is included. The story feels a little slow in its early stages but as it progresses it picks up speed and tension. It’s a great story, and the variety of authors and narrators does not distract. On the contrary, it feels right and adds to the confusion of the situation felt by the characters in the story. I liked it. Other reviewers don’t get it, the war is coming.

Very well put together anthology

I loved how they put the story together. Giving you pieces of each tale and weaving them into a greater plot.

Awesome format

This an anthology and a novel. The individual authors' works are presented in 2 or 3 parts, as individual chapters. The result is that it reads like a seemless novel told from multiple POV's. These stories a bridged together by Jonathan Maberry's own (interlude stories). Very well done, and now I have a few other authors I want to explore.

Mixed Bag, Mostly Great

This was such a fun read. I can’t say I loved every story line, but overall it was great. Will Wheaton’s reading of James Moore’s story was by far the most fun - super funny. Mayberry’s Junk was also really good. I loved how the stories were all stand-alone but also had a little thread that ran through them to make them cohesive. Loved it!

Really great take on vampires and our modern world

I love, love, love the concept of the vampire virus affecting you based on your cultures take on vampires. I think that most every single story in this collection was done well, intriguing and voice just as well. I think that if i had one complaint about the contents of the book, it would be in the way they are arranged. With as many stories as their are, and with as many breaks there are between stories for other ones, it is rather hard to keep track of some details, plot threads, and characters.

The performances were great, i really liked every single person narrating and think they all went pretty dang good with their particular books. My one gripe would be that will wheaton was a little much sometimes, but again that went with the book character and story he was assigned to.
