Publisher's summary

The date is 1966 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now, and the Republic, created by the human race - but not yet dominated by it - finds itself in an all-out war.

They stand against the Teroni Federation, an alliance of races that resent Man's growing military and economic power. The main battles are taking place in the Spiral Arm and toward the Core. But far out on the Rim, the Theodore Roosevelt is one of three ships charged with protecting the Phoenix Cluster - a group of 73 inhabited worlds.

Old, battered, some of its weapon systems outmoded, the Teddy R. is a ship that would have been decommissioned years ago if weren't for the war. Its crew is composed of retreads, discipline cases, and a few raw recruits. But a new officer has been transferred to the Teddy R. His name is Wilson Cole, and he comes with a reputation for heroics and disobedience. Will the galaxy ever be the same?

A bit dry, but delivers what it offers

Its a Space Opera, without the drama or character depth. More like - a space musical featuring elevator muzak. No depth to the characters, a very dry delivery. I like my Space buccaneers to serve up a little emotional depth with their plasma cannons.

I finished it, it wasn't terrible, but i won't be getting the rest of the series.

Needs character development

Resnick should add more depth to his characters. Wilson Coal is the hero. He lacks the nuances that make other authors' heros multi-dimensional. So far - having listened to two books - the hero doesn't make any mistakes or lose at anything.

Think Honor Harrington for an example of a well developed character.

Having said the above, I have purchased all 3 books in the series, so something brings me back

Enjoyable story if somewhat predictable

I enjoyed the characters and their personalities. This is not a "War" story so please do not buy if you want that type. It's a pretty light romp about cantilevering captain that has trouble following stupid orders that will cost lives. This book is first in the series and sets up the story - so it was somewhat predictable but looking forward to the second book to see the future adventures of the characters.

Military science fiction at its best

This is the series that I came up on by accident. As the author sets out in a preamble to each story, he is more concerned by the human side of being a military officer in space. Furthermore, he is a man of principle in a system which is all too fond of demoting him. A drum head court martial on trumped up charges lead to the crew of his ship, the Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt breaking him out of jail and running out of the system in an antiquated warship always on the run for being a mutineer. Mike Resnick has done a wonderful job in presenting Capt. Wilson Cole as a fallible human being but nevertheless, gifted with a touch of military genius combined with sheer human cunning. The aliens who serve aboard the Teddy Roosevelt are a strange bunch by anyone's definition but they come to life quite remarkably. The narration is excellent and the series ties together very well as the captain and crew come to grips with being on the run, and evolving from mutineers to pirates, mercenaries and finally, rebels trying to overthrow a corrupt and brutal republic which spans galaxies. The science is not terribly demanding but the characters and the interplay make for enjoyable listening.

Yet another I-know-it-all story

The story is about a man that is more intelligent than his fellow citizens. But if my fellow people was as slow as them in the book, I would be considered quite intelligent myself.

The book is introduced as a book not about technology, but about leadership. True, not much about technology and what can be considered tech or science related is bended to suit the purpose of the story. The leadership part is not too strong with a leader that makes sense all the time, but every one in higher command is just not making any sense.

I felt that the story failed to explain things more detailed and left with an incomplete picture a lot of times. Too many situations was tailored to fit the hero to feel real.

The narrator did a fine job - maybe overdoing our hero of the story.

very well written

This series of books (i'm on rebel next), its great. i've never had an audio book progress so fast and feel like im not missing anything before. Each book is pretty short, but still conveys the story of a 20 hours+ book. The characters have just enough definition to give you an idea of who they are and not enough to bore you to death with descriptions, very minimal repeat of information compared to books like the lost fleet, ++

Clever, witty plots, some action.

If you could sum up Starship in three words, what would they be?

Funny, intricate, action.

What other book might you compare Starship to and why?

Starship Mutiny compares favorably to the Horatio Hornblower nautical series where the buildup is as important as the action.

Which character – as performed by Jonathan Davis and Mike Resnick – was your favorite?

I really like FourEyes, the alien first officer. His sense of humor is the best of all the characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Wilson Cole does decide to mutiny and his reasons are moving. I especially like how his atttitude of saving lives if at all possible infected the entire crew, including his former captain, and made them into heroes.

Any additional comments?

This is a fun space roving adventure, I wish there were more battles, but overall a good mix of interesting characters, plot and action.
