Publisher's summary

Agent Franks of the U.S. Monster Control Bureau is a man of many parts - parts from other people, that is. Franks is nearly seven feet tall and all muscle. He's nearly indestructible. Plus he’s animated by a powerful alchemical substance and inhabited by a super-intelligent spirit more ancient than humanity itself. Good thing he’s on our side. More or less.

Sworn to serve and protect the United States of America from all monsters by one of the country’s founding fathers, Franks has only one condition to the agreement: No matter what the government learns of him, no matter what is discovered concerning his odd physiology or the alchemy behind the elixir that made him, the government is never, ever allowed to try and make more like him. Such is absolutely forbidden and should the powers-that-be do so, then the agreement is null and void.

Project Nemesis: in a secret location, using sophisticated technology and advanced genetic engineering, the director of the very agency Franks works for is making more like him. And the director is not content with making one. Nope, he’s making 13. Now all bets are off, and Hell hath no fury like a monster betrayed. Particularly if that monster happens to be an undying killing machine capable of taking out vampires and werewolves with one hand tied behind his back.

Usually a big fan of the MHI series

In this case I felt like the decision to use the LDS pre-existence myth as the basis for Franks’ origin story was a glaring, unnecessary and barely tolerable detraction from the otherwise great story. The story is already in a multiverse. There was no reason to dump in the Mormon doctrine. Pretty disappointed.

WWAFD? (What would Agent Franks do)

This is the next installment in the MHI series. In this novel you get to hear the story from the view of Agent Franks. He has a great backstory which has been hinted at in previous books but now gets explored in much greater detail. This is the typical MHI novel with lots of action, humor and a great story to boot. The narrarator is excellent and I feel that the authors works are actually better in audible format than reading them .

That being said there are a few minor negatives. First, we get that Franks is awesome. The author keeps the constant reminders up and it gets sort of repetative after a while. Second, the author does perhaps too good a job with the character. Franks isn't loveable, heck he isn't particularly likeable. He does a good job of getting this point across and that is the problem. While a good book, it is a bit harder to enjoy this one in that while Franks is cool, he isn't likeable and that makes it harder to root for him. This improves as the book goes on but it still takes a way from the story just a bit.

Still overall this is a great book and well worth a credit.

I do LOVE Franks!!!!!!

I've been enjoying this series since book one. It combines all my favorites. There are monsters, epic battles, explosions, humor, lovable characters and great adventures. It's well worth the credit and or the price anytime! I do suggest that you start with book one in this series because I wouldn't want anyone to be denied the total MHI experience. It's a fun ride :)

Loved the way Franks growled!

I have loved all the Monster Hunter stories and was wondering what the heck Franks' story would be like. Well, I loved it, too. Hard to take my iPod off. My daughter kept laughing at me because I was smiling so much. And every time Mr. Wyman would make the growly sound for Franks, I got a huge kick out of it. Mr. Correia did a great job of humanizing Franks and at the same time keeping him true to his "one-word" nature. I highly recommend this book if you don't mind lots of violence and gore. Could use a little sex in it though.

Outstanding!!

Would you listen to Monster Hunter Nemesis again? Why?

Probably not, not because the book isn't excellent, but because there are too many other books to listen to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mr. Franks aka Frankenstein working for the government taking out supernatural entities, great concept and fun action pack story.

Which scene was your favorite?

The knock down, in your face fight scene between ... (you have to listen to the book)!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I've tried.

I thought it would be my least favorite of MHI

If you could sum up Monster Hunter Nemesis in three words, what would they be?

Franks punches everything

Who was your favorite character and why?

Its hard to not love Agent Franks. He routinely only expresses one emotion, annoyance. He gets shot a couple times, that really annoys him. He gets into a fist fight with the head general of hell, that really annoys him. A couple gnomes threaten to "cap him" he gets really annoyed. (Franks with gnomes is a real treat).

What about Oliver Wyman’s performance did you like?

Oliver Wyman is one of the best narrators out there. I've been impressed on how he gives each character and creature a unique and easily identifiable accent and voice. The difference between "gangsta gnomes" and the deep growl of werewolves to a southern belle vampire shows how dynamic and unique his range of narration to go.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Owen's cameo appearance was perfect. I don't usually laugh out loud when I listen or read a book, however his upgrade to Frank had me laughing to the point of tears.

Any additional comments?

When I first heard that this book wasn't going to be about MHI but about Franks I was a little disappointed. Franks never seemed to interest me all that much, and I figured his backstory wouldn't be extremely different from the standard fare I grew up with. Despite this, MH Nemesis has become easily my favorite of the series for several reason.

First: Franks' back story is both at once familiar and completely new. He is Frankenstein's Monster, but he is a lot more than that, and his backstory is very closely tied in with the overall major plot arch that has been developing since book 2.

Second: Franks himself went from being a gruff but semi likable menace, to a truly lovable, but altogether bad_$$. Seriously, if Godzilla showed up in MH land, Franks would just punch him back to the ocean, all the while complaining on how giant lizards really piss him off.

Third: Characters that were villainous or at best morally gray, such as Franks, Grant, and Meyers are shown to be true heroes. I'm really impressed when authors do this. Grant goes from a selfish prick to a pretty solid guy, Meyers is shown to be an almost paternal character, and Franks is a more lobotomized form of Pit. The author portrays this shift in characters not as a growth or shift in character personality, but just by showing a different side to the character. It makes me interested in rereading the rest of the series, now that I know how good Franks and Meyers actually are.

All together this book brings all the best that MH has become. You have huge bloody fights, tons of "gun porn" big monsters, supernatural crisis, and Franks punting gnomes into another state.
