Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential - Quick, who directed The Evil Dead? What action hero starred in The Blob? Which movie studio became synonymous with horror for producing Frankenstein and The Wolf Man? If you can answer these questions correctly, you'll likely be thrilled with Monster Hunter International. B-movie aficionados know there's a fine line between gleefully gory camp and flat-out dross. Not to worry, Monster Hunter International knows the line. Oliver Wyman brings just the right amount of bombastic, smirking swagger to this story of big guns, big action, and a heck of a lot of monsters. —Michael

Publisher's summary

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It's actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries-old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way.

With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves. Business is good.... Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

Dark Humor

I had read this book about 2 years ago. I thought then how funny it was. especially in the depicting of fairies, ogers, wargs, elves, and other magical and mythical creatures.
Federal Government Bureaucratic overreach and the like.
a good story and very good narration of same.

Surprisingly good

A good mixture of horror and comedy. Mr. Wyman portrayed every character with distinction. No two characters sounded the same.

Fantasy goes tactical!

Apparently even vampires and magical beasts require not stakes and other specific techniques but thousands of rounds of modern artillery, with each gun and grenade described in loving detail. Diverting, but not seeing much to draw me into the whole series. (Don’t get me started on the adolescent handling of human relations!)

Top notch book.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to get the other books in the series. The narrator is superb in the way he makes it all so believable.

Larry rocks it again

You have monsters Vamps, Ghouls, Orcs, Worgs, and Werewolves. If your a gun nut you will appreciate the selection of firearms. Over all I gotta say I loved it. On to the next

Fun action packed read

I was first introduced to this author through his Son of the Black Sword. This happens to be one of my favorite books of all time, so I figured I’d give MHI a try. So glad I did. It’s not quite the masterpiece of Son of the Black Sword, but it’s definitely a fun, action packed, humorous, violent adventure.

Great concept but a few issues and errors

The concept is pretty good but there are a lot of errors shortcomings mistakes and just dropped balls. How tall is the protagonist? The writer mentioned several times that he weighs 300 pounds but we have no idea how tall he is. He supposedly speaks five languages fluently and can get by in other languages but apparently French and Russian are not included in this list?! Also the writer focuses too much on the specifics of the different weapons that the hunters use. That’s great for gun nuts but for the rest of the people who don’t know the difference between an MP five and an AK 47, it’s just noise. Lots and lots of errors lots of missed opportunities too much time spent focused on the important details and not enough time spent on action in my opinion. This was a fun read, but compared to other books by the author, this book falls very very short. Not sure if I’ll continue if this is a series

Really surprising - in a good way

Would you listen to Monster Hunter International again? Why?

Indeed I would. The story is really good. I bought it for Audible on sale, as a "Ok I will have it as a waste of time" book. But, it was good... Really good.

Enjoyed how the story develops. The book does not do anything to be correct. It is gory, funny, and a surprising story.

I will be trying the Next one in the series as well :-)

Who was your favorite character and why?

There would be too many spoilers to start talking about my favourite character. They are all really interesting and funny. Sometimes they are too much, but it works, and it works well.

What about Oliver Wyman’s performance did you like?

When he started I thought "OMG. 23 hours with this guy! I will not make it", but a few minutes into the story I was convinced that he is the right one for this story. He gives the characters life, and the story depth :-)

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Something containing "Abomination". You will know why when you here the story :-)

Any additional comments?

A good story. Funny, and it was fun to imagine all the monsters real moving around in our world. The side story where Lord of the Rings suddenly takes a twist is brilliant.
