Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential - Quick, who directed The Evil Dead? What action hero starred in The Blob? Which movie studio became synonymous with horror for producing Frankenstein and The Wolf Man? If you can answer these questions correctly, you'll likely be thrilled with Monster Hunter International. B-movie aficionados know there's a fine line between gleefully gory camp and flat-out dross. Not to worry, Monster Hunter International knows the line. Oliver Wyman brings just the right amount of bombastic, smirking swagger to this story of big guns, big action, and a heck of a lot of monsters. —Michael

Publisher's summary

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It's actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries-old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way.

With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves. Business is good.... Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

A fun listen for sure !

Overall this was a pretty enjoyable 'read'. The characters are fun, the overall story is engaging, and its a fun world to explore.
I do feel like the writing is a tad on the basic side, and it gets very predictable in places. Would recommend it for a light read / casual listen for sure.

Leaves you wanting more!

Which character – as performed by Oliver Wyman – was your favorite?

Oliver Wyman does such an excellent job that it is hard to choose a specific character. I enjoyed his performance of all of the charachers.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I loved the humor, wit and sarcasm that came across throughout this book. It held my interest and keep me involved to the end. I listened with a smile and laughed...a lot.
I definitely want more from this author and narrator and can't wait to get the next book!

MHI takes you down some interesting paths

MHI is not your normal monster hunter story. This one has some twists and turns that leaving you wondering how you got where you are. It also has a dash romance but just enough to keep all listeners interested. I would love to see this made in to a mini series but only if they didn't change the main story progression.

Entertaining like crazy!

Great story. By the end, you realize how good of a writer this is too. So many little things had purpose, and you can tell he really planned this story out in detail. Yes it's an action book, but it does have some great layers to it which surprised me. Great writing-- really holds you. Narrator was awesome! But sometimes i feel like his tone for the main character was too much the same.

Great Entertainment

If you have had a horrible day and need some fresh horror coupled with mayhem, this is your read. The concepts are fresh, the violence is over the top but the story contains humor and insight. The human condition is well observed. There are always victims and survivors. The characters are believable in their various bizarre contexts and the story is fun.

Great story, average performance

The story is very interesting and told first person which is fun. Definitely worth a listen!
The narrator has basically two voices for girls, and sometimes seems to get the wrong voices for different characters.

Awesome!!

This is a fantastic book. The only books I rate better are the ones later in this series. Narrator was fantastic. Loved the work Larry and Oliver.

You can trust this writer

I do not read the kind of books Larry Correia writes. Yet I've listened to two and will probably listen to more because I can trust this writer to deliver kick-ass good guys (male and female); stinky slimeballs; strong-arm bad guys; the Supreme and Nearly Invincible Evil; and best of all, an action plot with characters who crack jokes and are individual and sympathetic enough to involve my interest. Correia's fight scenes amaze me--they go on and on and when you think they ought to end by now, they go on. I get bored with the longer fights but I can respect what the author is doing because he does it well. If he's corny, it's because he intends to be. Once the gun goes off at the starting gate, you're in for a fast ride. With guns and explosions, lots of 'em!

Unexpected FUN

Oliver Wyman opened the world of Monster Hunters from the opening paragraph to the end. I was not sure what to expect with this book, but before I finished this one, I went back to Audible and bought the rest of the Monster Hunter books. If you want something fun to pass the time you won't be sorry with this series.
