Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential - Quick, who directed The Evil Dead? What action hero starred in The Blob? Which movie studio became synonymous with horror for producing Frankenstein and The Wolf Man? If you can answer these questions correctly, you'll likely be thrilled with Monster Hunter International. B-movie aficionados know there's a fine line between gleefully gory camp and flat-out dross. Not to worry, Monster Hunter International knows the line. Oliver Wyman brings just the right amount of bombastic, smirking swagger to this story of big guns, big action, and a heck of a lot of monsters. —Michael

Publisher's summary

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It's actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries-old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way.

With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves. Business is good.... Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

Far from a classic, but a lot of fun…

If you’re looking for serious toss and turn at night, chew your fingernails, horror, this isn’t the place to go. In my opinion, the book’s strength rests in character development. While only one book into the series, I find myself very interested in three or four characters, with another three or four that have a potential to grow into high interest characters. The book features a little humor, a lot of action, a little romance, and it’s just all-around generally fun. If you’re looking to suspend reality and enjoy a pretty well written, silly, light and action filled story, book one in the series fits the bill.

Decent, but Hollywood ending.

This is basically a paramilitary Supernatural.
The main character is an amalgamation of Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Wick, and The Ghost Whisperer. Chosen by fate to control an ancient evil artifact that will unleash an ancient evil upon the Earth.

No big surprises as far as the story goes.
The narration is done very well.
The only big complaint that I have is how incredibly forced the end events were. It's the Hollywood scenario where the good guys have been written into an impossible situation and the writer has to make up a bunch of unbelievable B.S. to get them out and have a happy ending.
Very disappointing.

why no movie yet???!!!

really, with all the remakes, it appears Hollywood is out of ideas, when there is a great franchise right here. they would be better than the regurgitated remakes they are selling now days.

It's Supernatural meets The Accountant

I enjoyed MHI immensely. If you're a fan of series and movies like Supernatural and John Carpenter's Vampires, this novel is for you.

Pretty good

This was a pretty good book, over all 9/10. A few things could have gone differently, but it was still really good.

A Great 1st Book

To this day this book holds my personal record for the fastest hook in any book I've read/listened to. And I had a great time listening all throughout it. I can't imagine anyone else Narrating the series. Perfect Narrator, fantastic music in the start and end that sends chills down my spine, and a great entertaining story about slaying monsters in a modern setting using modern tech. Awesome all around!
