Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential - Quick, who directed The Evil Dead? What action hero starred in The Blob? Which movie studio became synonymous with horror for producing Frankenstein and The Wolf Man? If you can answer these questions correctly, you'll likely be thrilled with Monster Hunter International. B-movie aficionados know there's a fine line between gleefully gory camp and flat-out dross. Not to worry, Monster Hunter International knows the line. Oliver Wyman brings just the right amount of bombastic, smirking swagger to this story of big guns, big action, and a heck of a lot of monsters. —Michael

Publisher's summary

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It's actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries-old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way.

With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves. Business is good.... Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

I was abducted and taken on a great ride!

What made the experience of listening to Monster Hunter International the most enjoyable?

I wasn't sure if this was a book I would enjoy. The premise seemed interesting, but...but...I wasn't sure. I'm happy to report that the story immediately grabbed my attention and held tight throughout most of the book. Like several other series I've read, present-day earth is inhabited by monsters. However, the public isn't aware of the dangerous creatures lurking in the dark. The government wants to keep this information a secret. Yes, the same old story, but told in a fresh and interesting way.

What did you like best about this story?

I love that monster hunters is a family-owned/run business. As with all families, there are some members that we would call the "black sheep" of the family. As the story unfolds, there is much action, humor and even a little romance. The characters are very likeable, even though some of them are a bit more military-minded than I usually enjoy. However, the paranormal storyline does explain the need for the gungho approach to things.

What does Oliver Wyman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

When I first started listening I wasn't sure if I liked his reading of the story. However, I quickly forgot that I was "listening" to a book. I soon found his reading so well done that I became absorbed in the story and forgot there was a "reader" involved. That is the best compliment I can hand a performer. Well done, Mr. Wyman.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

How about "You should be afraid of the dark"? Or possibly "It's raining frogs!"

Any additional comments?

I look forward to reading book two of this series.

And you thought your boss was a monster...

Z goes from bad guy to bad guy, fighting hard and barely making it through. This book has twists and turns that are unexpected and thoroughly enjoyable.

Seriously... if you site at a desk but dream of adventure, read this. If you dream of big guns and wishing you could use them. Read this. Love adventures where you're not sure who'll win? Read on! This narrators voice is nice to listen to, the characters are relatable and the betrayals are surprising as some of the victories.

Think Heinlein meets Buffy the vampire slayer... trust me, you'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll be looking for book two after binging on this for three days straight.

Great Story Excellent Narration

Oliver Wyman's narration is second to none and he flawlessly changes from one character to another. The story itself is superb with great character development and plenty of action. Larry Correia has created a perfect modern day monster tale that is driven by the characters and story line. Can't wait to listen to the next installment.

Cool premise ruined by terrible reader.

This guy could make surfing a tsunami boring. The story seems cool. I would have liked to have finished it but I’ve owned it for 2 years now and I’m throwing in the towel.

Enjoyed It; Reminiscent of Dresden

Entertaining book. I liked the sense of realism regarding the weaponry, tactics, and fights.

It reminded me to some extent of the Dresden Files, but it is definitely its own thing.

There was maybe a little too much deus ex machina type stuff going on, but it's okay.

Would recommend it to folks who like this sort of thing.

What a wonderful ride

I loved the characters and all the trouble they got into/caused. Laughed out loud in places at both the story and the story teller. Wonderful book.

Great story, amazing narration

My husband and I listen to books on our commute together, and is the book that start d it for us. It’s not always easy to find a book we both enjoy, so that’s saying a lot. It’s a comical, action packed, and just plain FUN story. And Oliver Wyman is an amazing narrator! We’ve listened to the entire series now and get excited every time a new book comes out.

Greatly entertaining.

If you're looking for a good story with some interesting characters and situations, try this book. Great for when you aren't looking for deep philosophy or complicated plots, just entertainment. The combat scenes are well done and the action is frequent and furious. Well worth purchasing.

One of the best books i have read this year!

if you like Guns, Action and Monster killin the "MHI" Series is for you. This book was recommended to me by a good friend and after the first couple chapters, i couldn't believe i had never heard of it before, the story is well thought out, action packed, funny and just downright fun to read/Listen to. The main characters are realistic and feel like people everyone could know, the "Surprise characters" are Hilarious (Skippy is amazing and the Elf queen is Priceless), I HIGHLY recommend this book and this series to anyone who wants a refreshing, new take on the same old monster books.
