Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential - Quick, who directed The Evil Dead? What action hero starred in The Blob? Which movie studio became synonymous with horror for producing Frankenstein and The Wolf Man? If you can answer these questions correctly, you'll likely be thrilled with Monster Hunter International. B-movie aficionados know there's a fine line between gleefully gory camp and flat-out dross. Not to worry, Monster Hunter International knows the line. Oliver Wyman brings just the right amount of bombastic, smirking swagger to this story of big guns, big action, and a heck of a lot of monsters. —Michael

Publisher's summary

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It's actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries-old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way.

With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves. Business is good.... Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

A cheesy, yet excellent book to lose oneself in

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is the type of book you pick up or listen to when you want to sit back, laugh a little and enjoy the ride. You can't take it seriously but the author does an outstanding job of keeping you engaged with twists, turns, and action that rarely slow down.

What other book might you compare Monster Hunter International to and why?

Little can compare to this book but the closest I can come when it comes to witty comments and style would be the Dresden Files

Which scene was your favorite?

The opening scene catches you from the start. You don't know what to expect and then, BANG, the story is there in your face and you are off and running.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When you get to the end and all of Z's predecessors are there, well, read the book and you will understand what he just did.

Any additional comments?

Read it, listen to it. This is a story you can take in time and again and will be a mainstay when I need that escape from reality.

New and familiar all at once.

Loved this story! The author brings a fun, campy, action packed story to life with some great twists on classic monster movie lore. Just when you think you've got things figured out, the author manages to pull the rug out from under you. I can't say it's revolutionary, but it's pure good fun and it's got me hooked. I'm writing this now having finished the second story in the series. I'll absolutely keep going. The performance is excellent, a wide variety of tones and accents really animates the broad cast of characters who are cut from a wide cultural and ethnic spectrum both within the USA and globally. If you're a fan of the Dresden Files, the Monster Hunter series will be right up your alley.

fun story

I enjoyed the story of an accountant gone wild as a monster hunter. The narration was excellent and Mr. Wyman captured the personality of each character very well. All in all a very enjoyable listening experience.

Great book

This book is a ton of fun to listen to. I give it 5 stars except in performance, which I gave 4, because I'm not a fan of how the performer voices the female characters. Not a big thing but I like to be honest in my assessments.

Entertaining "pulp" style adventure writing

While the story was pretty predictable and filled with stereotypical tropes and deus ex machina style plot contrivances, the characters and writing style were entertaining.

Impressed-Never Written a Review Before

This is the best bad book I've ever read. It's like a B action horror but it keeps you hooked from beginning to end. I wasn't going to buy this because I totally judge books by their covers and the synopsis for this book is also severely lacking. The narrator is fantastic...at first I wasn't sure but honestly by the end I think he may be one of the best. Worth the purchase and then some.

One Great novel of the supernatural

Fast moving, always waiting with anticipation of the next threat to pop up. M.H.I. has to save the world while fighting the bureaucratic Washington D.C and the demons from beyond. A lot of twists and turns but overall just a great story.

Great Book!!!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This was a recommended read by Audible and I am so glad I picked it up. I cannot put it down and I am looking forward to picking up the books that follow it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Owen is my favorite and I have really enjoyed hearing him tell his story.

Have you listened to any of Oliver Wyman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first time I have listed to Wyman but I feel the way he performs this story makes me feel like Owen is really telling you his story and when he does Harbinger I can picture what I think he looks like and I will definitely check out more of his work.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I so involved in the story that I did not want to put it down. I listened to it every day at lunch and at night when I came in from work. When I couldn't listen to it I bought the ebook from Amazon so I could at least continue to read it. I can't wait to pick up the second book.

Great story and great character

The characters are down to earth and realistic. I love the touch of almost adolescent humor sprinkled throughout. Makes me want to join a team like this.
