Publisher's summary

Dirty Harry meets Twilight. Number 3 in the break-out series and a follow-up to Monster Hunter International and Monster Hunter Vendetta.

Earl Harbinger may be the leader of Monster Hunter International, but he's also got a secret. Nearly a century ago, Earl was cursed to be a werewolf. When Earl receives word that one of his oldest foes, a legendarily vicious werewolf that worked for the KGB, has mysteriously appeared in the remote woods of Michigan, he decides to take care of some unfinished business. But another force is working to bring about the creation of a whole new species of werewolf. When darkness falls, the final hunt begins, and the only thing standing in their way is a handful of locals, a lot of firepower, and Earl Harbinger's stubborn refusal to roll over and play dead.

An Earl side story

This story focuses on Earl, answering to honor his past and accounting for choices.

As in his other books, Correia crafts relatable, human characters, with real arcs of development.

The plot rests, thankfully, upon people acting like real people. With the exception of a little bit of predictability, this goes very well.

For some reason, the reader was not quite as consistent in this book.

Why does the Russian speak like Christopher Walken? Don't know.

There were also a few mispronunciations, mix ups of character voices, and this seemed rushed compared to the reading of Correia's other audio books.

Great addition to the Monster Hunter franchise

If you are interested in how MHI came to be and, in particular, how Earl came to be the man(?) he is today, this is the story for you. Mr. Correia does another exellent job of weaving a fantastical story onto the backdrop of rural America.

The story's focus is on Earl and a little side adventure he took without the full complement of (or knowedge of) MHI resources. Things quickly grow beyond Earl's expectations and he finds himself in the middle of a battle for the future of mankind. Again. During the course of the adventure, Earl's background is revealed through a series of flashbacks as documented in the journal he keeps. Mr. Correia again generates an exiciting storyline and interesting characters which makes it difficult to stop the book.

Mr. Wyman repeats his excellent performance of the characters From the previous books adding vocal nuances and depth that provides a full dimension to the characters. Truthfully, I struggled between playing the audiobook at double speed to progress the story quickly and playing it normally to relish Mr. Wyman's performance.

It's not necessary to have read the prior two MHI books, however they will provide you useful insight to some of Earl's narrative.

Another kick-butt MHI book!

Well, once the story got going, it was fast paced and exciting. I loved all the Harbinger background story in this one. I don't want to ruin it, so I won't go into detail here. I will say, this is a Harbinger solo story, but it sets up some things for the future books too. Again, Oliver Wyman is ON POINT! One of the best damn voice actors out there. And I love his portrayal of Nikolai as Christopher Walken and Boris Badenoff. (you'll know what I mean when you hear the voices). Love this story. Finished listening to it over Halloween and jumped right into Legion (book 4).

Excellent story

The story is outstanding, it keeps you pushing for just one more page, just ten more minutes to listen! Next thing you know, you are reaching the end of the first chapter of the next book. Even though I wanted to take a star away for how they actually ended the book, I didn’t. It really bugs me though.

ALPHA story, Earl Harbinger is a beast!

Monster Hunter Alpha is quite a wild ride and menagerie of personalities. For those new to the series, this is not a bad book to read, however, I would recommend reading one of the first two novels in the Monster Hunter series prior to this one. I make this recommendation because, I began the series with this novel. I then went back and purchased the rest of the series after listening and the storyline and characters became more fleshed out in my mind's eye.

For those fans loyal to the series, this is a great deviation from the Owen Pitt first person narrative. There is quite a bit of jumping around of perspective. I listen to these books while I work, and the changing of perspectives were sometimes disorienting (to me because I'm an idiot), causing me to rewind and relisten. The story mainly focused on redemption of various characters with the underlying moral of 'Don't change who you are because... you can't change who you really are.' Great story, loved the characters AND monsters, try it out for yourself.

Hooray for Mr. Wolf

Loved hearing the adventure of just one man. Team work is great but it was cool to learn why Harbinger is who he is!

Awesome Book!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It's got everything: action, humor, and a little love story. Oliver Wyman is a superb narrator!

What did you like best about this story?

It was seamlessly narrated by Oliver. He brings the story alive! I loved the bit with Stark and the lady at the school who tells him about himself. Hilarious!

Which character – as performed by Oliver Wyman – was your favorite?

Earl Harbinger hands down. Oliver brings him to life in such a way that I can really imagine he would speak exactly like that. I love the grit you hear in his voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The last exchange between Nicholai and Harbinger.
