As Denver adjusts to a new master vampire, Kitty gets word of an intruder in the Denver werewolf pack's territory, and she investigates the challenge to her authority. She follows the scent of the lycanthrope through the mountains where she is lured into a trap, tranquilized, and captured. Her captors are a mysterious cult seeking to induct Kitty into their ranks in a ritual they hope will put an end to Dux Bellorum. Though skeptical of their power, even Kitty finds herself struggling to resist joining their cause. Whatever she decides, they expect Kitty to join them in their plot... willingly or otherwise.

I am a voracious reader (average about 4-5 Audible books a week, in addition to those I "eyeball".) I have been hooked on recorded books since the time of cassettes/CDs and was thrilled when I became an Audible member in 2007. I find reader reviews good guides to spending my credits, so have finally decided to write a few (although, I would rather be reading!)

"Kitty lite - might have worked better as a novella"

I am sure I will be in the minority again on this one, but, having ready every single Kitty book and short story (in addition to Vaughn's other tomes, such as "Discord's Apple"), I am becoming increasingly disappointed with each new entry in this series. The last volume seemed to be light in action, but it did have the saving grace of the supporting characters (namely Cormac and Rick.) I kept waiting for something (anything) to happen in this one. Kept checking the time stamp, thinking "when would this end?" I am not a quitter though, so kept listening. A lot (A LOT) of internal monologues (have you ever wondered how supple and kissable a human's lips are? -- well, Kitty has) but not much happens here and the book doesn't really move the grand story arc along.

Gavin's performance, as usual, is engaging, but even she couldn't breathe life into this entry into the Kitty Norville series.

What disappointed you about Kitty in the Underworld?

This is very slow and boring book. Three chapter (in a row) where Kitty to capture and alone in her prison talking to herself.

What could Carrie Vaughn have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

A sub-plot maybe Ben searching for Kitty.

Which character – as performed by Marguerite Gavin – was your favorite?

    Kitty

    "Not a deep plot."
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Limited story line in this one. The ending sets up a great idea for the next books and many potential plot lines. The majority of this book could have been accomplished with many fewer chapters and been a good element in a multiple plot-line book.

"Just a setup for future books"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Only if they were already hooked on the series, and even then only just before the next book in the series if they had other books to read. This book lacked too much of the core cast and the action other books in this series have.

What could Carrie Vaughn have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Figured out a way to bring others from the regular cast in to the main story line and liven it up.There was way to much of Kitty by herself, talking to herself or in her head while dealing with a bunch of "crazy people". No real action until the very end of the book and then it was a fight that was impossible to win.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Kitty taking the goggles from the demon.

Was Kitty in the Underworld worth the listening time?

No, not really I want my credit back.

    Any additional comments?

This book seems to have been a way to get some items and some ideas and information in to Kitty's world. Hopefully the next books will be able to use this to bring back the normal pace and feel of the Kitty Norville series.

    "That's a good Kitty"
Where does Kitty in the Underworld rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would put it in the 60s of the thousand or so I have listened to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Cormac is and always will be my favorite.

    Which scene was your favorite?

As not to spoil, I will just say the part when the woman is standing over Kitty's shoulder.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

I love the Kitty series. This was a good story that moved the overall arc along. In the end my only real complaint is that I wish it would have been longer. It was just way too short and I think it 'felt' more so because it was all in the same location. Pretty much that is what made it miss the five start rating. Of course Ms. Gavin is magnificent as always.

"Had potential...but my least fave of the series..."
Would you listen to Kitty in the Underworld again? Why?

    Meh....maybe...but its a slow starter.

What other book might you compare Kitty in the Underworld to and why?

Kitty is unique...but her series reminds me of the Cat and Bones series...but werewolves instead of vamps!

What does Marguerite Gavin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

MG is AWESOME!! she is one of my most fave narrators..

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

this book would not be a good movie...but this series would be a great tv show!

    Any additional comments?

Least fave of the 12...but I still love Kitty and cant wait till the next one...if you are a Kitty fan...you will appreciate it...Kitty will always Rock in my book!! :)

What would have made Kitty in the Underworld better?

A real story! Anything! How boring..... And it doesn't end...... I don't know if I will even continue the story, if this is what has become and I have always the books! My god! Talk about 10s going to a zero!

What about Marguerite Gavin’s performance did you like?

She did great even having a crappy story!

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    M Gavin

    "Did Kitty write this book?"

The character, Kitty, is known to be a talker and I think she might have actually written her own book. While walking the dogs, I listened to an entire hour of Kitty in a cave thinking about her options. It reminds me of Twitter where people post their every thought whether anyone cares or not.

I LOVE this series and I hate to see it end up like this - books where NOTHING happens.

    "Disappointing at best!"
    Any additional comments?

What happened? The past books were rich with plot and substance, unfortunately the absence of both in this book was a disappointment and difficult experience. The first hint of depth and adventure did not begin until the last chapters. This may well be the last Kitty read for me as the author seems to have lost interest and now so have I.

    "Good addition to the series"

    3-3.5 stars

This was a good story. I love the series and I liked this book however I wish the "Long Game" story line would move on and show some progression.

Kitty is checking out an intruder in her area when she's kidnapped. She's held captive in a silver mine and she has to figure out why she's been taken captive. The group that took her captive are 2 shifters, a witch and a vampire. They believe they have a plan to kill Dux Bellorum (from here referred to as DB) but they don't seem to have a clear view on current events and the resources DB has available to him.

Unfortunately their plan isn't what it should be since they don't realize DB's resources. Kitty tries to point out issues with their logic but does end up trying to help them carry it out, thinking that if they can actually kill him it would be worth it. There's a big fight but they're not able to accomplish their goal and so no real progress is made in the "Long Game" story line.

One downer is with Kitty being kidnapped and in a silver mine for most of the book, there's not a lot of interaction with her pack/friends/Ben and we only get to hear her do 1 show. The situation gets interesting however and things end on a high note with Kitty saved and back safe at home with Ben, Cormic and the pack. Unfortunately they end the book in the same place it started, still working on finding a way to stop the "Long Game". I'm looking forward to the next book in the series and hoping we see more progression in that book. :D
