Publisher's Summary

In a land where magic has been forgotten but peace has reigned for centuries, a deadly unrest is simmering. Three kingdoms grapple for power - brutally transforming their subjects' lives in the process. Amidst betrayals, bargains, and battles, four young people find their fates forever intertwined:

Cleo: A princess raised in luxury must embark on a rough and treacherous journey into enemy territory in search of a magic long thought extinct.

Jonas: Enraged at injustice, a rebel lashes out against the forces of oppression that have kept his country impoverished - and finds himself the leader of a people's revolution centuries in the making.

Lucia: A girl adopted at birth into a royal family discovers the truth about her past - and the supernatural legacy she is destined to wield.

Magnus: Bred for aggression and trained to conquer, a firstborn son begins to realize that the heart can be more lethal than the sword....

The only outcome that's certain is that kingdoms will fall. Who will emerge triumphant when all they know has collapsed?

What the Critics Say

"Falling Kingdoms will gut you emotionally. It will make you ache, cry, and beg for the sequel as you turn the last page. I absolutely loved it." (Julie Kagawa, New York Times best-selling author of The Iron Queen)

"This triple-layered tale of bloodshed, heartbreak, and tangled court intrigue kept me turning pages very late into the night." (Lesley Livingston, award-winning author of Wondrous Strange)

    "Surprisingly good!"
Would you listen to Falling Kingdoms again? Why?

Yes, There is a lot going on in this book. Sometime I had to take it back to listen to it again but it keeps you listening to the end. And then wanting more. The only bad part was that the beginning was slow and kind of confusing till you get into the book. You need to know this book is about 4 different people in 3 different countries. They all come together but it takes time.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Cleo, she goes through so much in this book that you can't help but root for her.

What about Fred Berman’s performance did you like?

He did a really good job.

"Great Book - Not a fan of the Narrator"
What made the experience of listening to Falling Kingdoms the most enjoyable?

The storyline is interesting and I enjoyed the overall plot as well as the interaction between the characters. I liked that the main characters were independant and seemed to stray from the usual sterotypes.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The Narrator for this book was extremely hard for me to listen to. He speaks in a raspy sort of voice that got on my nerves after the first few chapters. His adaptation of the character's voices make them all sound pretentious and bratty and I started to hate even the main character after awhile. I ended up just reading the book rather than listen to the audiobook. I highly suggest if you are interested buying, listen closely to a clip and make sure you can handle his reading.

Passion. He was able to make me believe he "was" the characters.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Both.

    Any additional comments?

    Must read!

    "Fun entertaining book"
If you could sum up Falling Kingdoms in three words, what would they be?

    Fast, Fun, Entertaining

What does Fred Berman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Fred Berman did a fantastic job bringing each character to life. Each having it's own voice, made it was easy to follow the story. He keeps the pace of the book moving along and even though this is a complicated plot, he does a great job of keeping you engaged and keeps things in line with the story being told.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I have a hard time sitting through any audio book in one sitting since I can't keep my eyes open long enough. However, even though I listened to this book at night towards bedtime, it was easy enough to pick up where I left off the night before and fully understand what was happening. Thank God for the timer in the audible listener and for bookmarks!! The narrater really does a fantastic job. The voices of each character, the emotion of them and the plot of the book were all top notch in my opinion. Can't wait for the second book now!

    Any additional comments?

I hate cliff hangers! Now I have to wait for the second book to come out!

    "well....."

soooo. i forced myself to listen to it...
the performance is pretty good. but the story... (spoil alert)

jonas. he really annoys me! he doesn't try and find out what happened. he s in his own little pitiful world. cleo did not kill his brother. but he blame everything on her.

Magnus. he claim that he loves lucia, that he can do anything for her. but the things is he only loves her because she s pretty and nice. that s very shallow...

there s no depth in the characters.

i don't want to spoil it too much, so i ll leave it like this. and I don't recommend it.

"A good listen with an nesting writing style"
What did you love best about Falling Kingdoms?

The story was good and the way it developed the plot from different perspectives was great. It was sometimes frustrating because you can see why a character thinks a certain way but you as the reader has a different perfective knowing the other side of the story.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters were interesting and we'll developed. It was easy to connect with them and their story.

Have you listened to any of Fred Berman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Never have

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it was to long for that but I did listen to it in large chunks over 3 or 4 days. Too busy to do more than a short story in one sitting.

    Any additional comments?

Given how the plot built and the ending, I expect that the second one will be better. The one thing I didn't like was the cliffhanger ending. I think it is tacky and the author should give closure. Same reason I dislike TV episodes that are too be continued. You should read the next one because you like the plot, characters, and style and not so you can find out the last the result of the last thing written in the previous book. Author didn't need to end like that.

    "Fallen but not Broken"
If you could sum up Falling Kingdoms in three words, what would they be?

    Majestic, Mesmerizing, Masterful!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Falling Kingdoms?

    The prologue

What does Fred Berman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The main cast of characters in Fallen Kingdoms are all complex unique individuals. Mr. Berman animates the complexity of these characters, making every single one of them a living, breathing, authentic person. Without Mr. Berman's narration these characters' experiences would be far less relatable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes, absolutely.

    Any additional comments?

I didn't know what to expect from this series, since I had never heard anything by Mr. Berman before and read any works by Ms. Rhodes. However, I have been pleasantly surprised and the Fallen Kingdom series has become my series of the year! Book 1 is marvelous and had me desiring to read the rest of the series, even before I was finished with the book!

Ms. Rhodes has crafted a fantastic world, filled with intriguingly complex characters, with such authenticity and humanity, that all of the characters are highly relatable--even the cruelest villains. Further, Mr. Berman has the perfect narration for each of these complex characters and brings their complexity alive.I highly recommend Book 1 to any person who loves political intrigue and an authentic fantasy world filled with truly modern-day human characters, which you will love, hate, and cry for.
