This is not the story of preppers with stockpiles of food, weapons, and a hidden bunker. This is the story of Colton Ryman, his stay-at-home wife, Madison, and their teenage daughter, Alex. In 36 Hours, the Ryman family and the rest of the world will be thrust into the darkness of a post-apocalyptic world.
A catastrophic solar flare, an EMP - a threat from above to America's soft underbelly below - is hurtling toward our planet.
The Rymans have never heard of preppers and have no concept of what prepping entails. But they're learning, and they are running out of time. Their faith will be tested, their freedom will be threatened, but their family will survive.
An EMP, naturally generated from our sun in the form of a solar flare, has happened before, and it will happen again, in only 36 hours.
This is a story about how our sun, the planet's source of life, can also devastate our modern world. It's a story about panic, chaos, and the final straws that shattered an already thin veneer of civilization. It is a warning to us all - never underestimate the depravity of man.
What will you do when the clock strikes zero?
Midnight is forever.

This was so scary because it's something that could happen. The summary above tells exactly what the book is about so I'm going to get straight to my thoughts.
While reading this, all that was going through my head was, if this happened now, I'd be screwed!! Lol. I live in the country, the nearest town isn't that far away but it isn't a massive one. We don't have a mall near us, the nearest being 40 miles away, we don't have a place where you can easily get some of the things needed to survive, plus I wouldn't have the money to go buy all the things needed, so like I said, I'd be screwed!!
But Alex and her family have the resources to get whats needed. Alex is a smart girl and knows that what the media aren't saying about the coming solar storm is just as important as what it is saying. She urges her mother to prepare but both her mum and dad think she is wrong. Yet 36 hours before the impact, they are warned to prepare. Can they pull it together in that time while panic is setting in every where and people are all trying to do the same. How do you prepare in the right way when you have no idea what you need? Can you and your mother do this while your father is hundreds of miles away, trying to get home?
This book reads both like a post apocalyptic book, but also a "what to do just in case" type of book, which I liked. It's also not bogged down with the language and gore of a lot of other books in this genre. There is enough in it to get you to realise exactly what life could be like and how humanity is tested, but it's suitable for younger kids to read.
Anyway, this was a fast paced, educational (you'll see why when you read it) and entertaining read. It really makes you think "what if". What if this happened, what would you do?? As the author says "The characters depicted in The Blackout Series are fictional. The events, however, are based upon fact."
Kevin Pierce was just as good as always. I've said it a few times before, he has a good voice for this type of book. He is always clear and concise and knows how to tell a great story.
*I received a copy of this for review. This in no way affected my thoughts.*
Retired. Mom with 4 grown boys. Addicted to audio books also a news junkie. Favorite genres are Sci-fi, prepping, space and apocalyptic.
This story is really good. It's not about a well prepared survivalist but is about and everyday person and his family. The characters are well written and could be my next door neighbors. I found my self emotionally involved with the characters. This story is an easy read. It is the first 5 hours of what I think will be a great series. As always Kevin Pierce did a wonderful job of narrating. Although it is not a teaching book you will learn and you will be entertained. My only complaint is book 2 is not ready yet. The author has several series out. I finished a book one of another series of his and started this book waiting for the next book. It is the only reason I give the book and overall 4. Otherwise I highly recommend this book.
Love action packed, informative and plausible books. Apocalyptic, Government corruption books. CIA.... Nathan Mc Bride, Pike Logan
I can't speak to the print version but there is no way I could do it better then Kevin Pierce. He has become my favorite narrator.
Chapter 20, I was sitting in the truck nodding my head agreeing with everything that was said at that point. I love the satire of a hillary president and the chaos that even the universe would wish upon us.
Kevin nailed this! Wish I could give him more stars, it was a perfect match. I had my reservations after "the wall" or "canyon" but this one was out of the park.
The seasons edge of your seat thriller that will have you hating the off season.
I received the book free for an unbiased review, It has not changed my opinion at all. I have criticized books in the past and sang praises. The book was short is my only critique of it.
I would definitely recommend this audiobook to a friend. The book has plenty to keep a listener interested and has a terrific narrator. The subject matter is really good and handled well. This is a great start to a new series.
One of the most memorable moments of the book was Madison being attacked at the ATM. No one coming to help. It was dramatic and showed how typical modern people are at not getting involved in anything anymore. No one would get out of line to help. It took her daughter to save her. But they would take time to use their phones to record the savage beating Alex gave the mugger with her golf club and post it to youtube.
Colton was my favorite. As the father away from home on business he was coming to understand how dire the problem was and needing to get home. He does what it takes to make it home to his wife and teenage daughter.
36 Hours how will you spend your last hours in the modern world?

I loved that this was probably a realistic depiction of how regular people would probably panic to get ready at the last minute for a CME. It does not bode well that so many people were totally unprepared. I'm looking forward to the next two books coming to Audible.
This book is another great start of post-apocalyptic series. There are great characters and a lot of action, love the Ryman family. I only wish is that the book contained the 2nd book of the series as well as too short. Recommend this series to anyone who likes post-apocalyptic without zombies. Good narration too. I liked this book. Although I received this copy for a review, I can not wait to buy the next one.
This is a story of an average family awaiting what might be the end of it all.
I received this book in exchange for a review and I am going to give it.
This is a great start to a series, it has just enough real science to validate the story line without boring you. The characters are developed and engaging which makes for a fantastic listen.
Action from beginning to end, it leaves you waiting for the next book to come out.
I like the way the author used existing real people of some notoriety to add color and background to the story, very well done.
This was a fast paced, informative read. A nice mix of science, some prepping lessons and human behavior under stress. Big fun, and good learning to boot!
It was nice to listen to Kevin again, and this premise interested me a lot due to the science of it. I must admit there was a lot to take in at first. But as each first chapter introduced us to the characters and to what was coming, I got more and more sucked into the story.
Preppers do have the mentality attatched to them of being a bit on the wacky side, but I think in all honesty having some sort of stock about you really isn't. Especially with the way the world seems to be heading. Maddison was a fab Mom and did everything she could to help calm her daughter down and protect her from even her own thoughts at first.
Alex totally different gal, you think she's this quiet kid who just wants to do what kids do, but she rescues her mom from a mugger with a golf club! There were some really tough moments in this story. And the more we got to know Maddy and Alex, and her husband Colton. The more we were routing for them being re-united.
I think my only grip is that it's so short. I know there's a sequel, but I feel it's actually really part of this story. It stopped at a good place after they met up, but the only thing that led me to want more was the bonus chapter/teaser.
Still excellent listen, Kevin has a deep, but soothing tone I really like. He puts great twists with his male and female characters and I'm happy to listen to anything he narrates because of that. Next one please :)
