Wuthering Heights

By: Emily Brontë
Narrated by: Patricia Routledge

Publisher's summary

The passionate and tragic story of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff is one of the high points of 19th-century Romantic literature. In the relationship of Cathy and Heathcliff, and in the wild, bleak Yorkshire Moors of its setting, Wuthering Heights creates a world of its own, conceived with a disregard for convention and an instinct for poetry and the darkest depths of the human soul in torment.

One of the best performances I ever heard

Any additional comments?

There were several choices for this book. This may have been the longest but I feel I made the best choice. Couldn't "put it down" so to speak.

A little slow-going

I wasn't a huge Wuthering Heights fan when I read it in junior high. I gave the audio version a chance (now 15 years later), and while I liked it slightly better, I still struggled to get through it. The narrator was decent, though she grated on my nerves a little in the beginning. I know I should appreciate it as one of the classics, but it was so hard to finish this audible book.

My Favorite Audio Book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I recommend this audio book to all my friends! I could not tear myself away from this story and narrator.

What did you like best about this story?

The narrator took me to each scene in the book. I felt the presence of the characters, they were real. The best performance by a narrator. Incredible.

More then a book..

When you read this book and consider when it was written you realize that it is more then just a book..but art at it’s finest. There are many great works written my talented men and women. Today we are surrounded by so many offerings that are clearly written to make money...this story is not one of those and has stood and will stand as work of art.

Patricia Routledge delivers a stunning performance

Patricia Routledge delivers a stunning performance of one of the most dramatic and layered stories of all time. She brilliantly captures the personalities without turning them into caricatures.

For those who don’t know the story it’s a dark but compelling gothic novel about love, betrayal, revenge and redemption with a terrifying but sympathetic villain and heroes so complicated you aren’t even sure they are heroes. It’s the reason it is still favorite over 200 years after it was written.

I found the voices distracting. Some were hard to understand.

Faux accents were hard to understand. I found the voices distracting. I would still recommend

I can see

I can see how many people cannot get into the characters of this book, but I think Emily Bronte wrote them purposefully that way. The reading is fantastic on this version. One of the best Ive heard.

What a dismal story!!!

I’m sorry to say that I spent 15+ hours hoping that this story had some element of happiness and hope. It did happen at the end and I am meeting my goal of getting through the classics. But I’ll not be reading this one again.
That being said, Dame Patricia’s narration was exquisite and worth every minute!

Would you consider the audio edition of Wuthering Heights to be better than the print version?

Yes

What did you like best about this story?

I love the narrator. She takes the housekeeper Ellen Dean and makes her a real character. The depth is awesome in this rendition
