Publisher's summary

The start of a new series from New York Times best-selling author Courtney Milan....

She will not give up.

Three months ago, governess Serena Barton was let go from her position. Unable to find new work, she's demanding compensation from the man who got her sacked: a petty, selfish, swinish duke. But it's not the duke she fears. It's his merciless man of business - the man known as the Wolf of Clermont. The formidable former pugilist has a black reputation for handling all the duke's dirty business, and when the duke turns her case over to him, she doesn't stand a chance. But she can't stop trying - not with her entire future at stake.

He cannot give in.

Hugo Marshall is a man of ruthless ambition - a characteristic that has served him well, elevating the coal miner's son to the right hand man of a duke. When his employer orders him to get rid of the pestering governess by fair means or foul, it's just another day at the office. Unfortunately, fair means don't work on Serena, and as he comes to know her, he discovers that he can't bear to use foul ones. But everything he has worked for depends upon seeing her gone. He'll have to choose between the life that he needs, and the woman he is coming to love....

Cute and Short

This is a prequel to the series. This was cute, short and different from the usual setup.
I already listened to the 1st story in the series and liked it much less.

Extremely entertaining.

Judging from this first book in the series "The Brothers Sinister" by Courtney Milan, I am 100% sure I am going to adore them all. Very well written with strong characters who stole my heart from the start. I loved the development of the relationship between Hugo an Serena. Rosalyn Landor is an excellent narrator and brought the whole story to life for me. Really looking forward to book 1 as this was book 0,5. A definite 5 Stars all round!

Fabulous!

This is a truly wonderful love story. While not terribly long, it is so well written and read that it grabs you and you end up listening to it without pause.

What about Rosalyn Landor’s performance did you like?

Ms Landor is a truly great narrator. She is clear, her characters are easy to distinguish from each other and the listener is instantly caught up in the story. Having read the book, it is a pleasure to listen to the story so well read that it exceeds the written version. Bravo!

An excellent beginning

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have recommended this a couple of my historical romance junkie friends. It embodies the time period but with a twist. It isn't about the privileged class - as is the case with the majority of historical romance.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved Serena. Her determination, unwillingness to accept defeat.

Have you listened to any of Rosalyn Landor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to Rosalyn Landor before and I do enjoy her performances. This one is on par with the others.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I found myself eager to find out what happens in the next interaction between Hugo and Serena.

Any additional comments?

I can't wait for the next book in this series. The epilogue just makes me want it more.

Excellent Start - Not to be Missed

I usually don’t read novellas as they are too short. Having enjoyed this series through Audible I decided to give it a try. The story is poignant maybe predictable, but the charm wins me over. I wish I had read it first. The performance is very good. I hated to say good-bye to the h/h.

Brilliant!

Absolutely loved this novella which is a prequel to The Brothers Sinister series.
It is so very well written with an in depth and subtle character building that you as the reader won't realize is happening till you suddenly realize that you 'know' each character. They become your family, your friends.
And of course Rosalyn Landor's narration is perfection itself.
If you want a quick, easy, interesting and enjoyable read/listen, then this is the book for you. I'm really excited that I've found a new, great series.

Her team of narrators make the story come alive. Absolutely love their work!

Would've made a good novel.

Novella length rushed things a bit but I can't find it in myself to fault Ms. Milan for that. It could've stretched to novel length and still been a good story.

As it is, very likeable characters and good dialogue. A fun listen, and that's my main criteria when buying romances, so money well spent.
