Publisher's summary

New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts deftly blends romance and suspense in this compelling novel of a woman whose career, marriage, and very life are threatened by the truth about her own past.

Emma McAvoy may have grown up in the limelight, but some secrets are hidden in a darkness no light can reach. Now on the verge of a successful career, and having fallen in love with the man of her dreams, Emma is looking to the future. Yet it’s the past that is about to catch up with her.

For Emma, her childhood had been almost like a rags-to-riches fairy tale - until the tragic night that changed her family forever. But what Emma thinks she knows about that terrible night and the man she’s about to marry is only half the truth. The other half is locked away in the last place she’d ever think to look: her own memories. It’s a mystery a handsome and relentlessly driven homicide detective needs to solve in a case that’s haunted him for years - and a secret someone will kill to keep.

Perfect mystery

The depth of this story was astounding!
We are touched by tangled family dynamics, abuse (drug, familial and spousal), gaslighting, all of which wind us in a wild captivating story. It’s the fantastical elements in the story, a rock princess who is in danger from multiple people all the time, that only add to the reality of the lives we only imagine the children of the rich and famous live. In the end, we are left with the feelings that are pulled from us as we paint a mental picture of the torture, pain and struggle for normalcy and peace. 100% recommended.

Karla

So I read a lot of positive and critical reviews of the book. One long winded one had six points that I found untrue as I read the book. Everyone, of course, is entitled to opinions, but I found that one rather harsh and unrealistic (of course, I listened to the entire book to find that out :))

The book goes through a twenty year period, so you have to be prepared to read a story that goes through twenty years of happy, sad and rather uncomfortable moments. But, to a certain degree, Nora Roberts mixes realism and fantasy with sprinkled humor.

At times, the book does drag a little, but I appreciate that the story is carefully and skillfully crafted. It was really worth reading it!

The love Emma's devotion to her father and how as she grows up, she sees his imperfections, but her love for him never waivers. I cried with Bev and I adored Michael.

I really believe that the book is worth reading.

The narrator really did a nice job. I think as listeners, we are not used to dialects, but give it a chance, you'll get over it fast.

And, of course, my greatest satisfaction is that I listened to the whole thing and found a very happy ending!

Disturbing details of domestic violence

While I love this author’s character development I feel that there was far too much detail I’domestic violence. Several chapters read like a how to manual for men who wanted to abuse women and have them not reveal there traumatic experiences.

Who done it

The cockney accented people were distracting. Perhaps an English or Irish actor could have handled it a little more robustly, but the narrator's non-accented parts were wonderful.
