Publisher's summary

In this next searing tale of the Immortals After Dark series, number-one New York Times best-selling author Kresley Cole delves deeper into the mysterious Clan MacRieve, a family tormented by ancient agonies and forbidden wolven hungers.

Uilleam MacRieve, a centuries-old Lykae warrior, was captured, caged, and experimented on by a shadowy human order, along with other immortals. During a prison break that devolved into one of the bloodiest massacres in recent history, he escapes. But the aftermath of his unspeakable torture preys on his damaged mind, while the wolf inside him roars for vengeance and carnage. In the days leading up to the full moon, can MacRieve rein in his beast, even when he encounters his mate - a vexingly impossible female unlike anything he'd ever dreamed for himself?

Great all around

Loved it! Story was great and narration was best performance I've heard so far, especially in his treatment of the female voice and the steadier scenes. Would definitely buy more from this author and narrator

Really good addition to the series :D

4-4.5 stars

**the description is a bit misleading and in order to do a decent review I had to let a few "secrets" slip so be forewarned that this review might be considered a bit spoilerish**

This was a really good story. Chloe was a great heroine. MacRieve was good overall but he had some issues that made me want to kick his butt (even if they were understandable to a point).

Chloe is a professional soccer player that has just been accepted to the Olympic team. Her sport has been her complete focus and she's never dated or even been interested in guys. Just as her aspirations are coming to fruition, she starts to notice changes in herself. When she tells her father (Webb of "The Order") he gives her a book to read (the Living book of Lore) before leaving on a "business trip" and then doesn't return.

Uilleam MacRieve is one of twins but because so many people butcher his given name he prefers to go by MacRieve. He and his brother lost their parents at the age of 13 and it came about because of a "relationship" that MacRieve was in with a Succubus that took advantage of him as a youth. Since then, MacRieve has had problems controlling his beast and hated all Succubi.

MacRieve was taken captive by "The Order", a group of humans that capture and study (aka torture) Lorian beings because they think Lorians will attack humans. MacRieve and other Lorians manage to escape the facility but what he went through has him on the edge and he's close to finding a way to end his suffering for good (aka die). Before he can do this he find out that there's an auction being held by some witches to sell off the daughter of Webb, who is the man that led the Order and was responsible for his torture. When he and his brother go to the auction, MacRieve realizes that Webb's daughter is his mate. He loses is and lets his beast go in order to save her. She's injured but he's able to get her healed and to the MacRieve's compound where she'll be protected by their pack. He's determined to win her but just wishes that she were immortal so they could have an eternity together.

Chloe is pretty terrified by all that's been going on but she finds that she likes MacRieve and is willing to explore things with him. She's really torn about all she's learned about her father since he was always loving to her. However, things change completely when a sexual encounter between her and MacRieve triggers her change into a Lorian. MacRieve freaks out because she ends up being a Succubus, a creature he hates with all his being. He realizes that she's a lot different than the other of her kind that he's known before but thinks that now that her true self has risen, she'll change into what he hates. Unfortunately, because she's his mate, MacRieve can't just let her go but he also takes out his malice and hatred on her. Chloe is stuck in a bad situation and doesn't have much luck with getting past his issues. Things come to a head when his hatred of what she is causes a danger to her and certain things happen that show him that all Succubus aren't evil molesters. Things turn around for them and in the end, they're able to love each other and get their HEA together.

This was a really enjoyable story. I loved Chloe as a heroine and liked her attitude. MacRieve was a pretty good hero when he wasn't taking out his issues on Chloe. Overall, I really liked the story and was happy with the way things turned out. I'd recommend this story and the series. :)

FYI, the last 30 mins of the audio was actually a preview for another book by Cole.

O boy! You made my toes curl

I must say that KC keeps out doing herself. One of the hallmarks of a good author for me is one who can write two very similar stories and yet make each their own. That is what this is. Although the story line is very similar to another of her wolves, this was still its own story and it got me.
I loved it

OMG Panty-wetting Good

I read this book about two years ago and loved it. I wasn't into audio books at that time so I wasn't aware that the audio book existed. I found it during the sale and bought it just for the accent. The narration was fabulous. Macrieve's accent was enthralling. I would listen to a cookbook read by this man. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Mas o menos.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was alright. I cannot pinpoint the problem, it was just ok. Not spectacular.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Well, the small preview for next book made it better.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I think this is what bothers me. I've listen to 3 books in this series and it has been the same accent/voice for the protagonists. My first book was Lothaire and since then ALL the males, sound like Lothaire. Now, the next book... same voice. It changed from the one he had during this book to "Lothaire voice".

What would have made this romance irresistible?

I don't know. *shrug*

Any additional comments?

I love Kresley. She is an instant buy for me, but I think I will preview the audiobook next time and maybe get the book on my nook and imagine a sexy male voice for the protagonist *giggles*

Classic Kresley Cole

With one or two exceptions, I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the books in this series ( My favorite being "Lothaire," and least favorite "Dark Needs at Night's Edge" in case you were wondering). While the series is admittedly formulaic, each story feels fresh and different. I am equally interested in the individual story of each book as I am with the larger picture. I can only imagine how Cole manages to keep the timelines and histories straight since there is so much interaction between all of the characters.

Anyway, what can I say, if you like the Immortals After Dark series, then you don't even have to think about adding this one to your collection. If you are new to the series, start at the beginning and enjoy. I will add that this story has a lot less action than some other books in the series, and most of the conflict is internal, so there's a lot of angst, etc. I enjoy a good personal struggle, so it worked out for me. Also, the soccer references and analogies were a little annoying at first, but I got used to them. While Macrieve isn't my favorite in the series, it was enjoyable, and as usual, Robert Petkoff did an excellent job with the narration. Oh! and there was a teaser at the end about Munro's story, which made me crazy since I'll be waiting forever to find out what happens with that! sigh.

PREPARE TO CRY, FLY & SIGH AS IT'S AN AWESOME RIDE

We PNR fans wait impatiently, counting the days with baited breaths and cursors eagerly hovering over the 'Add To Basket' tab for the next riviting instalment of the IAD series (unless we've already pre-ordered it of course) and this one naturally does not disappoint.

What a clever well written roller-coaster emotional ride - first come the Ahhh's as we learn Macrieve is being abused by a Succubus at such a young age, and then the heartbreaking fall-out follows when his family finds out. Years later we have the Wooo Hooo's as he smells and seeks out his mate Chloe and for a while there's a peaceful false Yipee of a lull. Suddenly there's the Oooo's, Outch and Arrrgh's and some WHO THE/WHAT THE .... twists as the storyline throws you in a 180 degree loop and, for a while, all you can do is hang on and scream.... that is until the next 'I didn't see that coming' moment sneaks in.

Macrieve, the Scots Warrior and Chloe's epic and intense love story is unmissable with great characters involved in a 'thrills a minute' pulse-pounding tense book that's packed full of emotional scenes such as torture, rage, death, revenge, loathing, humour, lust, passion, sex, disbelief..... but thankfully this is followed by forgiveness, loyalty, redemption, romance and eventually love.

I'm a HUGE fan of Robert Petkoff and his input into this series is invaluable as he flawlessly delivers just the right voices to each of the character and fills the chapters with emotions which, in turn, brings them alive and makes the listen sooooo much more enjoyable.

Worth a credit? Well, after spending 12 credits already on this fantastic series, I was only too happy to spend another - so that's a YES and long may this series continue and, at the end we get a small taste of how Munroe's life has taken a shocking turn, so I'm ready to pre-order it ASAP.

HOW DOES SHE DO IT!!

Every time I think that this is 'just another Kresley Cole book' she writes another brilliant work. And, yes, as you read Ms Cole, you do get the rhythm of her plot lines and know, in a sense, what the basic story will be. The true genius of Ms. Cole is--so what...the basic predictability just serves as a platform for her to pull you in with new characters, new twists to that basic plot (as MacRieve superbly does) and more revelations about the characters we have come to know and love, such as Regin the Radiant, Lothaire, and my personal favorite Nucking Futs Nix. In addition, we have all the creatures of the Lore and there must be hundreds, each with a description that is so clear, they become alive to the reader. And finally, the humor is electric and hilarious. Ms Cole can deliver some of the most fabulous one-liners EVER as well as some very humorous interactions between characters. The sensuality is always steamy and delicious.

When you add all that to such magnificent narration at the hands/voice of the talented and mufti-accented Mr. Robert Petkoff, you have an enjoyable, delightful, fun and funny time listening to these books.

In MacRieve, the plot/story twist is almost unbearable as Chloe and MacReive struggle with the destiny that they share...destinies as different as they are. I cannot recommend this audio with enough stars. If you love the paranormal, if you love a fabulous love story, if you love some laugh-out-loud dialogue and characters...don't miss this one.
