A hand-picked cadre of warriors, they had the fierce courage of their Scots forefathers, combined with the stealth and cunning of the Indians who lived beside them in the wilderness. Battling the French in a no-holds-barred combat, they forged a new brand of honor, became a new breed of men - MacKinnon's Rangers.
Iain MacKinnon had been forced to serve the British crown, but compassion urged him to save the lovely lass facing certain death at the hands of the Abenaki. He'd defied his orders, endangered his brothers, his men and his mission, all for a woman. But when he held Annie's sweet body in his arms, he could feel no regret. Though he sensed she was hiding something from him, it was too late to hold back his heart.
In love and war, there are times when the only course of action is...surrender.

~~~~~~~HOPEFUL ROMANTIC~~~~~~~~~ ~~Love Audiobooks~~ Especially Historical & Inspirational Romances ~~No Spoilers Here~~
This book has it all....Indians, Scottish Highlanders, Royalty, and Romance. (This story is packed with history based around the Albany area of New York State.) It is a beautiful book that is filled with sacrifice, courage, compassion, bravery, desire, love and romance.
Within the first couple of chapters I was drawn into the story of Iain and Annie. The heartbreak and conflicts that both had to endure was deplorable and I knew immediately I had to find out if they overcome their struggles. Of course, there was lots of "smoldering fire" between them which also helped to keep me listening!
The narrator did an excellent job. He had many accents (English, French, Scottish, Native American) to deal with.....not to mention the male/female voices. He made it easy to distinguish the different voices.......which I appreciate.
Cant wait for another book in this series.
Addicted to listening, Loves a good story and a good narration!
This series is very much history, action, adventure, and romance in the style of the movie ( not the book) "the last of the mohicans". Clare writes great stories that keep you entertained from beginning to end, and balance suspense, romance and adventure in a perfect way.
The real magic happens in this audio book with this amazing narration.Griffith is just excellent!
I have listened to over 400 books, and in my opinion there are only two masters of narration that never get it wrong: Roz Landor and Kaleo Griffith ( who is fairly new on the scene, but must have gotten great training and has an amazing voice and talent). There are other good narrators but these two are just a cut above the rest.
Audible, please bring more Pamela Clare and more Kaleo Griffith!
Enjoy this book and the rest in the series, they are great fun and worth every credit!
reviews for fun
If you like historical romantic novels you can not go wrong with Mackinnon's Rangers. Great story based around early American history, great narrator. I am now on book 2.
Better than Monica McCarty's books.
This is the best romantic series that I've read so far. All three books are fantastic!!
I listened to all three of the books in this series. Excellent stories. Wonderful characters. And Kaleo Griffith brought them all to life.
I liked all three of the MacKinnon brothers. They all had their strengths and weaknesses which kept me rooting for them to find true love and hold onto it.
I've only listened to his work on this series and would definitely recommend others give his work a try.
Five full star's and a wow,wow.I can't say or describe how much I loved this one.perfection can kaleo Griffith narrated all audible books!
Voyager by Diana Gabaldon part when war starts in the new world.
Never listened to kaleo Griffith,but a fan now.perfection!
Yes,yes,yes!so upset when 3rd book ended.But I could listen to it again
Mr.Gaffith,was a voice I could melted into,and see the story come alive in.
This is Iain and Annie's story. Iain is the eldest MacKinnon brother. He is forced into service in the British army by William Wentworth - one of his family's greatest enemies. When he comes across Annie in the forest, he saves her from certain death against his orders. Thus begins a romance to write home about.
Audio notes - Kaleo Griffith is a god. His use of accents is wonderful and while he differentiates between men and women, he does not try to sound like a woman.
If you're looking for a well-written, fantastically narrated story about love amongst war, this is the book for you.
Have listened to all three of the McKinnon historical books and loved listening to everyone. Kaleo Griffith could read the phone book and I would listen, but he brought these stories to light for me. I do not listen to a lot of historical romances but certainly would listen to more if he narrated. That being said, Pamela Clare is one of my favorite authors and her books are always on my auto buy list.
More Kaelo please!
Reading is a must-have ESCAPE...
As a lover of the romance genre coupled with being a history buff, I found Clare's rendition of the time period incredibly well-done. What drew me to "Surrender" was a generated recommendation due to my previous positive reviews on highland romances written by Paula Quinn & Karen Marie Moning. Having now read it, I'm not sure why the system thought to make these comparable. The writing and story lines are nothing alike. Yet, I'm thankful for it regardless. What a well written story.
Rather than bore reviewers with my summary of what has been written on at nauseam, let me instead offer reviewers some context. In "Surrender", Clare infuses real historical accounts of pre-Revolutionary conditions in the American colonies in which the English & French were fighting for control of the territory. Clare's Ranger series seems to center around what is known as the French & Indian War. Varying Indian tribes, long inhabited the continent prior to European domination, ally with one European against the other. Clare brings a personality to the chaotic and dark time with her fictional characters not to mention love. Hence... a historical romance.
Of the many narrators I've listened to, Kaleo Griffith does an exceptionally wonderful job of narrating the male characters, especially Ian, and still manage the femininity of Lady Ann's voice. Each of the main character's plight, insecurities, and personality crafted by Clare were conveyed brilliantly by Griffith. Well done all around! Now I'm looking forward to the rest of the series... next one is out in a several weeks.
This is the first Pamela Clare book I've read. I will definitely read more. There are good guys, a really evil guy and, surprisingly for this genre, a complex guy (Wentworth) who you assume will be evil, but turns out to be sort of decent when you consider the times in which he lives. It's a stretch, but I can see Wentworth being rehabilitated as the hero in a future book???
This is such a good light read. You get historical romance (light on the historical creds, I will admit) a happy ending and the setup for future Rangers stories. There are steamy scenes including one really kind of weird shaving scene ......
This is also the first Kaleo Griffith narration for me. He is so very good.
I highly recommend if you're looking for a good story, a good narrator and a little more character complexity than romance novels usually provide. .
