Editorial reviews

The first novel in the New Species series from best-selling erotic romance author Laurann Dohner is by turns suspense-filled, brutal, and steamy.

Ali Ahn, known to New York stage audiences and for her cameo work in television crime dramas, brings an urgency and tension to the story of nurse Ellie Brower. The pharmaceutical company employee discovers to her horror that the company is experimenting with the DNA of what have become animal-humans. That shock is replaced by infatuation with Specimen 416, which brings on first his hatred and then a mutual lust that becomes as much a part of their lives as an ongoing struggle to survive.

Publisher's summary

Ellie is horrified to discover the pharmaceutical company she works for is doing illegal experiments. Company scientists have spliced human and animal DNA, creating exotic new species. One such "experiment" captures her heart and she’ll do anything to save him - even if he hates her for it.

Fury has never known compassion or love. He's spent his life in a cell, chained and abused by humans. The one woman he allowed himself to trust betrayed him. Now he’s free and set on vengeance. He vows to end her life but when she's finally in his grasp, harming her is the last thing he wants to do to the sexy little human.

Fury can't resist Ellie - the touch of her hands, her mouth on his skin, her body wrapped around his. He's obsessed with the scent of his woman. And Ellie wants Fury - always has. She craves his big, powerful body and wants to heal his desolate heart.

But loving Fury is one thing... taming him is another.

Reader Advisory: This story contains the heartrending aftermath of a rape scene involving a captive male. Another scene involves capture and forced touching by a hurt, vengeful Fury.

I Survived FURY

Laurann Dohner isn't the best writer. Her writing style at times bade me want to quit reading several times. However the plot twists and turns had me hooked. I survived Fury butt it wasn't always pretty especially the beginning.

Interesting with some difficulty

Very imaginative with some grammar and word phrasing errors. The narrator needs work enuciating properly.

Powerful and erotic

Couldn't put my 'headphones' down. Loved how the characters were brought to life and the introduction of more characters. Very reminiscent of Lora Leigh's Breed series

Great Story & Action, Repetitious Sex Scenes

I love the way Laurann Dohner writes action scenes. She does an amazing job. She also does a great job of world building, and of building tension in her world. The new species characters are a mix of intelligence and naivete that really pulls you into their story. (4/ 5 stars).

I really enjoyed the world of her series, so much so that I kept reading long after certain aspects had me less than turned on.

I've read five of the books so far, with a growing sense of disappointment as the sex scenes became increasingly repetitious. The situations are unique, but the descriptors used again and again drove me nuts. All the human females are "tiny" and "fragile" (no tall girls?) With the exception of their jobs, hair/eye color, etc., they are the same woman over and over again. There needs to be more variety.

Because the men are bigger (everywhere), we are treated to the same routine and exactly the same words to describe each encounter, every time with very little variation. The men are afraid they will hurt the human females and the females have to assure them over and over that they are "tough" and "can take it." This becomes really annoying as there are several mixed race couples on the scene by the fifth book. It should be obvious to everyone that the human women can in fact "take it."

Once they have sex with a human female, the men are crippled by their need to possess them. We hear about their smell and soft skin and the overwhelming need to protect. Mostly though, the men become cave men who need to control the women by growling at them and fighting any male who touches them. The word "mine" is used after the first sexual encounter, sometimes even before that, and the women pretty much become their possessions and are unable to exercise any freedom. These are strong independent women with careers, who fold like a broken beach chair after a weak attempt to assert themselves. But then, why would they want to with such strong sexy males to control them?

And during sex, the women are all afraid to have sex with the males because the males are huge. Consequently, the males are all very careful, and by the end of the scene, the women all note that the "pain becomes pleasure" as the large member engages "all of the nerve endings" in their vaginas. Later, when the males finally let go and "get it on" with the women, they are instantly wracked with guilt about hurting the female, and she has to reassure them again that she liked it. Really? There is no variation of this routine. And it is eye rollingly painful to listen to by the 4th book. (1 star).

The sex scenes, rather than adding to the romance of the story, actually began to detract as the buzz words became almost laughable. What a shame.

And for me, there was the "dog" ick factor. I really did not need to learn how sex works for dogs. Really, I didn't. The cat new species are created from lions and panthers -- which was cool. But the dogs? Couldn't they have been wolves or bears or something -- anything other than Fido? That was really not sexy. At all. (0 stars).

I would have to be very bored indeed to purchase another book in the series, even though I REALLY enjoyed the overall stories and the action of each book I've read so far. I'm bummed that Ms. Dohner can't find a way to make the sex scenes as original as the rest of the book. Really bummed.

The reader, Vanessa Chambers, was fantastic. I'll be looking for more books read by her. (5 stars!)

Incredible series

What made the experience of listening to Fury the most enjoyable?

I've never written a review before but had to with this series. I've enjoyed 11 books in this series and found it so wonderful that I had to start over with it. It is just as good the second time around. I would have to say Brawn is my favorite book but they have all tickled my imagination and my fancy. When I finish the 11th book again, I'll continue to the final book that is available. I hope there will be plenty more additions to this series!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ellie, because she risked life and limb for love, even if she lost it.

Which character – as performed by Vanessa Chambers – was your favorite?

Fury, because she made me feel his pain and hopes in the inflections of her voice.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

I love the New Species world and the concept is fascinating.

Love New Species!

I have read this entire series and was so sad when no other books were available. So now I've decided to start listening to the entire series on Audible. Fury was not a disappointment! It was very good and now I'm looking forward to the next in the series, Slade. I highly recommend the series, it is by far my favorite and I read a lot!+++
