Publisher's summary

Twenty years ago, she had her whole life spread out before her. She was Bess Walsh, a fresh-scrubbed, middle-class student ready to conquer the design world. And she was taken. Absolutely and completely. But not by Andy, her well-groomed, intellectual boyfriend who had hinted more than once about a ring. No. During that hot summer as a waitress and living on the beach, she met Nick, the moody, dark-haired, local bad boy. He was, to put it mildly, not someone she could take home to Daddy. Instead, Nick became her dirty little secret - a fervent sexual accomplice who knew how to ignite an all-consuming obsession she had no idea she carried deep within her. Bess had always wondered what happened to Nick after that summer, after their promise to meet again. And now, back at the beach house and taking a break from responsibility, from marriage, from life, she discovers his heartbreaking fate - and why he never came back for her.Suddenly, Nick's name is on her lips...his hands on her thighs...dark hair and eyes called back from the swirling gray of purgatory's depths. Dead, alive, or something in between, they can't stop their hunger. She wouldn't dare.

Disappointed

The story had so much potential but had a disappointing ending. The characters were ok and the story was so intriguing but the truth about Nick's life status was a sad truth. I would compare it to Charlie St Cloud. Ultimately, it is not a book I would recommend.

.........speechless!

I started this book, never before listening to Megan Hart.........

I wasn't real excited about by the story and frustrated that the story was kinda moved slowly........

BUT THAN YOUR SUCKED IN AND UNABLE TO WALK AWAY!

And there's All this hope for some thing to be.....but just not possiable ( trying not to give anything away). And you ride the emotional ride right along with the main character and yet nothing is predictable and you are amazed till the last page of the book at what is hidden all along.

WOW!!! Very well surprised,
and the only reason I did not give an over all 5 was its not one of the books I love so much that I would read it over and over again.

But have no regrets in using my credit for.

A Manifestation for the Unrequited

This book really surprised me. I wish the title were different, as I fear it only lends itself to the basest connotation (once you know what genre it belongs to). So, yes, yes, it is “deeper” than that.

I recommend this book to any woman in her forties (and beyond!). This book’s unique look at regret is worth suspending your disbelief (unapologetic incorporation of the supernatural in the narrative). For me, the romantic bits far surpassed the sexy bits, but I’d argue that the sexy bits were necessary to complete the metaphor of depth—in one’s heart, psyche, secret desire—the text had me reflecting on women’s lives and roles and lack of pleasure they endure because they don’t make choices based on what they want or need when they are at their most powerful or desirable. They don’t even know they have agency! Oh to be desired when you are capable of understanding how your own body works! I seriously hope my daughter’s generation gets to embrace agency earlier than mine. But I digress.

So, yeah, I went deep (har har). Spend a credit if that sounds like a good thing for you too.

Deeper (bws)

I enjoyed Deeper more than I thought I would. It was longer than I expected but then not long enough. I had to adjust to the then and now. I thought there should have been more in then and now about Andy and how he and Bess got back together and ended up married. I didn’t like the ending. Didn’t like how Bess started to be inconsiderate to Nick although their relationship was consuming because of Nick’s restrictions like when she went to the bar after dinner with Eddie. I don’t think it was ok for Nick to be making out with the girl at the end in front of all those kids and it was unrealistic that Bess’s sons would have been ok with Nick doing it and not just sitting on his mother’s deck. Any normal son would not have allowed that disrespect , at least not Robbie. Connor wanted it found out. Then there should have been more development about Bess’s decision to drown him and risk drowning herself in the process. Was she trying to go with him but got saved? Was it Nick giving her breath while kissing in the water that saved her? Unrealistic that Bess would have just kissed Nick and made love to him after seeing him wth the blonde without at least washing out his mouth and taking a shower to clean off . Needed more at the end. Nick action at party was extreme. In the story he was angry with Bess but didn’t resort to this type of display when alive. Nick could have left for a few days or Bess could have told him to get out , just for a couple of days or at least say he didn’t want to see him. I assume he saw Eddie kiss Bess at the carport but there was no comparison to the chaste kiss privately and what Nick did.Versus what was almost like a murder assisted suicide, Nick could have walked the extra step and became non-corporal. I wouldn’t TJ

Sad, Happy, and Sexy

Great format and good story. It brought up all sorts of emotions about love lost and/or not required from my youth. Awesome book.

Brilliant!!

I loved listening to Deeper, I have listened to all of Megan's books and this one was what was expected and a little more. Great listen, the narrator was very easy to listen to and does an amazing job!

Best summer read so far!

This is probably one of the best stories I have listened to in a long time. When I first started listening I was not sure how I would like the flash backs to then/now but once I got into the story I could not stop listening. As stated in the earlier review, the summary is very misleading and not at all what the book is about. Nick is not a "bad boy" and no one in Bess' family ever disapproved of him because they never met him. Bess did not have him over because she did not want to explain why she was seeing Nick when she was supposed to have a boyfriend, Andy, back at home. In addition, her parents were not even at the summer house just a parade of different relatives each week. Bess was not a waitress she was the manager of an ice cream shop. This was a great summer romance with a twist of something different. Definitely worth a credit or your money. Narrator was excellent too!

WOW

This book was NOT AT ALL what I expected.

So much heartbreak. I finished it yesterday and my stomach is still all tied up in knots.

About the narrator, I've said it before and will say it each time I listen to her...Absolutely fantastic. The best I've ever heard. No one else brings a story alive like Savannah Richards.

Now I'm off to find other titles that she reads.

Maybe I read too much????

But this book bored me. I skipped through a lot of the book. The intimate scenes were kinda hot, but after a while, they, too, got old. Nick, to me, had no redeeming qualities aside from the fact that he was, apparently, good in bed and Bess was weak for putting up with Andy for 20 years. Sadly disappointed that I wasted my monthly credit.

Best Megan Hart book so far

I have enjoyed every Megan Hart book I have read but this one hands down was my favorite. It can be labled as a paranormal romance as well. I loved the development of the story transitioning from past to present. I wish the ending would have found the miracle I was looking for in the book but what is a romance without loss.
