Publisher's Summary

"I've written this book because there's a growing sense that when it comes to God, we're at the end of one era and the start of another, an entire mode of understanding and talking about God is dying as something new is being birthed." - from What We Talk About When We Talk About God

How God is described today strikes many as mean, primitive, backwards, illogical, tribal, and at odds with the frontiers of science. At the same time, many intuitively feel a sense of reverence and awe in the world. Can we find a new way to talk about God? Pastor and New York Times best-selling author Rob Bell shows how traditional ideas have grown stale and dysfunctional and reveals a new path for how to return vitality and vibrancy to how we understand God. Bell reveals how we got stuck, why culture resists certain ways of talking about God, and how we can reconnect with the God who is with us, for us, and ahead of us, pulling us forward into a better future - and ready to help us live life to the fullest.

    "God is leading us ahead"
What made the experience of listening to What We Talk About When We Talk About God the most enjoyable?

Rob's style is very conversational. I feel he is sitting right there next to me explaining all this to me, personally. He doesn't speak down to me, but he does talk about some very complex things in a way that I get it.

What did you like best about this story?

I love how filled with hope his message is. How he explains that God is bigger than anything we imagined. He focuses on what is essential, but doesn't shy away from the things that have been obstacles. Rob talks from his heart, but it is filled with knowledge and reason, too. What he says really makes sense. I get it. I understand it.

What about Rob Bell’s performance did you like?

    His conversational style. Understandable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, and I almost made it.

    Any additional comments?

This is a book for everyone that is willing to be open to the possibility that God really is bigger, more loving, more forgiving than any of us every imagined.

"Rob Bell at one of his finest."

I have to admit that although I am a huge Rob Bell fan and enjoyed all his books I tapered off after all the junk that surrounded Kove Wins. I won't tell you how I feel about the book right now but let me just say that my love for Rob Bell never wavered regardless of all the junk that was being said. However, as he moved out of the spotlight and I wasn't surrounded by his work, I simply let him drop off my radar. When I saw this book come out I picked it up right away, but have just gotten around to reading it. I have to say how incredibly sad I am that I didn't read it earlier. At the same time it hit me exactly where I am right now. So, I highly recommend this book. I think it is so insightful. It does just what Rob Bell does best: take something ordinary and see it in an imaginative, boundary pushing, brilliant way. It is both thought-provoking and action producing. I highly recommend it. Five stars.

    "Connecting the dots!"

This book was a God-send! I'm a Christian that has been very disillusioned with Christianity. I've read and listened to other spiritual teachers who were not Christian, but felt that a lot of their teaching is supported by scripture, not contrary to it. Rob Bell connects it all so well and beautifully.

    "Fantastically mind expending..."

Rob always has a way of beautifully expanding words into thoughts that are challenging and freeing and insightful and, in my opinion, true. this is another example. I will be listening to this again and suggest it for anyone, of any faith, including the faith of science-alone. Thanks Rob! Come visit Seattle any time, I'd love to host your visit!

Such a great perspective on our expanding universe, our expanding selves, and our expanding knowledge of who God is and what God is doing in the world.

    "Loved It"

Often I cannot articulate my questions, thoughts and feelings but Rob Bell knows exactly how to put them into words. He pulls what the Bible says and applies it to our modern, everyday life. I think, though, what I appreciate most is how he makes God seem real, relevant - someone you want to really know, respect, be friends with, talk to...

For anyone who takes the time to actually listen, Rob Bell is one of the great thinkers and spiritual leaders of our day. This book is no exception. Listen and be awakened to the truth that God is with us, God is for us, and God is ahead of us. Thank you, Rob for this gift.

If you could sum up What We Talk About When We Talk About God in three words, what would they be?

    Hopeful, Inspirational, Real

What did you like best about this story?

Bell is always inspirational, but here he really shines bringing us perspectives on God that are clear, direct, thoughtful and don't make you cringe at all.

    Any additional comments?

The adult version of God that is very helpful for people who know there is something there, but squirm at naive magical thinking.

    "Typically thought provoking"
Would you consider the audio edition of What We Talk About When We Talk About God to be better than the print version?

We'll done Mr Bell. Back to your thought provoking best. I must admit I think quite a few folks will lose themselves in the first hour or two, but it really appealed to my science background.
