Publisher's summary

Former soldier. Ex-copper. Current man on the edge.

Shunned by his old colleagues, and dividing his time between a dead-end job and the bottom of a whisky bottle, former Police Scotland detective superintendent Bob Hoon’s life is a mess.

Then an old face from Hoon’s Special Forces days turns up asking for help: His teenage daughter has been missing for months, the police have drawn a blank, and he needs the kind of help that only Hoon can provide.

And besides, Hoon owes him one.

From the Highlands of Scotland, to the mean streets of London, Hoon’s relentless hunt for the girl will see him make new friends and encounter old enemies. Enemies who know what happened to the girl. And to hundreds more like her.

But Hoon’s been given something that makes him dangerous, something he thought he’d long-since lost: a purpose.

He may be a disgraced ex-copper, a barely functioning alcoholic, and a borderline psychopath, but Bob Hoon still believes in justice.

And he’s just the foul-mouthed bastard to dish some out.

From JD Kirk’s DCI Logan series, Northwind is the first in a new series of action-packed thrillers for fans of Lee Child, James Patterson, and Mark Dawson.

Grizzly

What a character! At first I didn't like Hoon, but he definitely grew on me. Looking back on the story I felt a bit in the dark as I didn't get good word pictures of the surroundings. So much of the story was spent on foul-mouthed humor that I didn't see much more.

Just the One?

Seriously, there’s only one Bob Hoon story? C’mon, we need more of this garrulous, foul-mouthed, brilliant crusader. Pretty please.

Another great series from JD Kirk! I love Bob Hune!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love all of these Scottish books and, thank you, Angus King for such an amazing performance as always! Thrilling, suspenseful and always a good laugh in there as well! As I always say at the end of a JD Kirk book, keep them coming! Cheers!

I cant get enough of JD Kirk

Bob Hoon is the kind of hero we all need in our lives. He offers a moral compass, grit, and hilarious sarcasm that keeps me rapt.

How can you laugh out loud in the middle of a tense crime thriller?

JD Kirk has given center stage to one of his most vivid characters in the DI Jack Logan series and what a smashing debut Bob Hoon has made. If I had been reading this I would have said his energy and vitality flew off the page but, with Angus King’s pitch-perfect portrayal, Bob was in the room with me. His imaginative swearing, his appalling, lunk-headed comments, his violent behavior all belie an intelligent, moral, self-sacrificing man loyal to a fault. And I haven’t even mentioned the clever plot with plenty of surprises. I don’t know when I have had a better time all by myself. Come back soon, Bob. You’re something else.

The great: Bob Hoon is a great character. The story was interesting, and I loved the humor. The narration was also excellent.
The less than great: I'm not normally squeamish, but some of the fight/torture scenes did make me squirm. That could be seen as a testament to how well the book is written, however. Also, as another reviewer pointed out, I really wished Kirk had finished the story arc in this book and started a new one in the next book instead of having it continue.
Despite my minor nitpicks, this book is definitely worth 5 stars.

This an extraordinarily good audiobook!

I rarely write reviews, But I was very impressed by this audiobook. The Robert Hoon character is great…sort of a Scottish version of a Jack Reacher, but less psychologically stable. Swearing for days, which in a vacuum would be tiresome, but it works in this story. The narrator is fantastic. Anyone less talented and the story probably suffers significantly. After I finished this audiobook, I immediately bought the 2nd book in the series!
