Publisher's summary

From farmer Joel Salatin's point of view, life in the 21st century just ain't normal. Here, he discusses how far removed we are from the simple, sustainable joy that comes from living close to the land and the people we love. Salatin has many thoughts on what normal is and shares practical and philosophical ideas for changing our lives in small ways that have big impacts.

>Salatin, hailed by the New York Times as "Virginia's most multifaceted agrarian since Thomas Jefferson [and] the high priest of the pasture", and profiled in the Academy Award-nominated documentary Food, Inc. and the best-selling book The Omnivore's Dilemma, understands what food should be: wholesome, seasonal, raised naturally, procured locally, prepared lovingly, and eaten with a profound reverence for the circle of life.

And his message doesn't stop there. From child-rearing to creating quality family time, to respecting the environment, Salatin writes with a wicked sense of humor and true storyteller's knack for the revealing anecdote.

Salatin's crucial message and distinctive voice - practical, provocative, scientific, and down-home philosophical in equal measure - makes Folks, This Ain't Normal a must-listen book.

Should be required reading for the human race

This is my first Joel Salatin book. I intend to go and read all of his books now. I appreciate the insight into his life and hope to make some changes in my own.

Coolest farmer on earth!

I wish I could've met him when I was younger. Although I have had some people near me that have helped me understand lots of these basic, and necessary, ways of life.

Salatin Magnificent

Master Communicator Joel Salatin does it again with "Folks, This Ain't Normal". In this book Joel describes the extent to which our conciousness regarding food has shifted away from historically normal standards, and the personal, economic, and spiritual implications. Definitely an entertaining and eye-opening read.

Joel Salatin may you live for ever.

Love everything about this book. Joel’s narrative of his own book was great. Thanks for opening peoples eyes to our broken food system. I’ll begin to do my part in sourcing locally grown food. Thanks great book.

Read, look, learn, act

This is not just a book about what is wrong with the world - there are a lot of great ideas on how to fix things from ground level (pun intended). Joel is a great narrator, and very well-educated and researched.

There will be parts in this book that won't sit well with everybody, especially with people who go about looking to be offended. It is impossible to make everybody happy all the time - once that is acknowledged, we can move on to agree that we need to speak up with our dollars and diet, as individuals and as citizens.

This book isn't about whether you should eat meat, what political party you should associate with, or any of the hot and divisive modern topics. It is about how a government that is supposed to support and serve us has actually stolen our right to grow our own food, share our food, or even *gasp* sell what we grow in our own backyard. These rights used to be normal and God-given, and most people don't even know that they've been taken from us.

Joel doesn't shy away from covering hot topics like our personal rights, what really goes into government approved "safe" industrial food, and often quotes our nation's founders to really spell out where we are now, and from whence we came and still could return. Stand up, reclaim your food rights, and support your local farmers!
