Publisher's summary

From farmer Joel Salatin's point of view, life in the 21st century just ain't normal. Here, he discusses how far removed we are from the simple, sustainable joy that comes from living close to the land and the people we love. Salatin has many thoughts on what normal is and shares practical and philosophical ideas for changing our lives in small ways that have big impacts.

>Salatin, hailed by the New York Times as "Virginia's most multifaceted agrarian since Thomas Jefferson [and] the high priest of the pasture", and profiled in the Academy Award-nominated documentary Food, Inc. and the best-selling book The Omnivore's Dilemma, understands what food should be: wholesome, seasonal, raised naturally, procured locally, prepared lovingly, and eaten with a profound reverence for the circle of life.

And his message doesn't stop there. From child-rearing to creating quality family time, to respecting the environment, Salatin writes with a wicked sense of humor and true storyteller's knack for the revealing anecdote.

Salatin's crucial message and distinctive voice - practical, provocative, scientific, and down-home philosophical in equal measure - makes Folks, This Ain't Normal a must-listen book.

Worth every minute

This is the first book I've listened to or read by Joel Salatin. Educational, inspiring, amusing and relevant. I only wish laws were better now than when he wrote this.

Highly recommended. Off to listen to another book on regenerative farming, then another Joel Salatin book.

The Smartest Man in Agriculture

I have Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture with a Major in Animal Science from the University of Tennessee with a couple years spent at Berry College in Georgia.

With all of the opportunities to study under some professors in my chosen field of concentration there are some professors whom I consider to combine academia with common sense and creativity. Some of those include from University of Tennessee - Prof. Ed Lidvall, my collegiate livestock judging team coach, Dr. Bill Backus and Dr. Frank Masincupp (Never had Masincupp in class but anyone who could smoke that many cigarettes 30 years ago and still be living has something going for him. He was my student advisor. From Berry College - Dr. Stewart Fowler, Dr. Allen Scott and Professor Dan Dale and Ray Larsen. Larsen wasn’t a professor but I worked under his guidance daily as he thought young men and women how to raise and manage beef cattle at Berry in the Berry farms. All smart men and good men!!

Lidvall and Stewart were creative thinkers who refused to be pigeon-holed by academic normalcy. They were open to and sought out solutions to problems outside the confines of the masses. Having time to live and mature, years later, I have an additional appreciation and admiration for their contributions to my growth.

I only wish Salatin could have been a professor to have added to the list. When it comes to thinking outside the box and offering creative suggestions with practical applications for anyone with a love of agriculture and farming, in my opinion, he may the smartest man in the practical applications outside the restrictions of a classroom in Agriculture I’ve ever encountered.

My biggest regret is I didn’t find him years sooner. My agriculture endeavor would have taken a different turn. I highly suggest his book “You Can Farm”.

Bravo Joel Salatin!! You are a genius!!
