Publisher's summary

From farmer Joel Salatin's point of view, life in the 21st century just ain't normal. Here, he discusses how far removed we are from the simple, sustainable joy that comes from living close to the land and the people we love. Salatin has many thoughts on what normal is and shares practical and philosophical ideas for changing our lives in small ways that have big impacts.

>Salatin, hailed by the New York Times as "Virginia's most multifaceted agrarian since Thomas Jefferson [and] the high priest of the pasture", and profiled in the Academy Award-nominated documentary Food, Inc. and the best-selling book The Omnivore's Dilemma, understands what food should be: wholesome, seasonal, raised naturally, procured locally, prepared lovingly, and eaten with a profound reverence for the circle of life.

And his message doesn't stop there. From child-rearing to creating quality family time, to respecting the environment, Salatin writes with a wicked sense of humor and true storyteller's knack for the revealing anecdote.

Salatin's crucial message and distinctive voice - practical, provocative, scientific, and down-home philosophical in equal measure - makes Folks, This Ain't Normal a must-listen book.

A True Green Economist!

Joel Salatin just makes sense. In light of today's authoritarianism, he has answers! Even a decade after this was published, his insights and common sense stands the test of time and scrutiny. Joel Salatin has the gift of taking all difficulties plaguing small businesses, in particular, farm to market access, and articulates what many people question on a daily basis when they can't acquire what they demand. A staunch proponent of personal responsibility and libertarian solutions to governmental red tape, borne out of Americans cry to have government solve the problems instead of taking the responsibility to solve local problems locally. Joel is a natural storyteller and keeps you engaged, especially when you question the official governmental narrative, post-2 weeks to flatten the curve! If you view the government as necessary for every detail of your life and believe if government hasn't ok'd it, it's not "good" enough; you probably won't enjoy his refreshing honest view of everything. But if you are willing to have your government centric narratives challenged, you might find this book enlightening.

This should be required reading for all humans!

If you eat food you should read this book. Joel Salatin reads his own words. I have seen him speak in person and now I've listened to him read me his story. I really like him either way. He has a lot of important things to discuss.

Sometimes preachy, but informative

I downloaded this because I recognized the author from one of Michael Pollan's books (I don't remember which one, I have several). The narration took some getting used to, but it adds character (and wonderful sarcasm) that a 3rd party might not have been able to produce. As I noted, it tends to get a little preachy, but the book is basically an argument for change, so you can't really hold that against the author. All in all, it was interesting and informative. I love the action plans given at the end of major topics.

Folks, this is normal!

Sounds like Jeff Foxworthy, but no joking here. This book will make you excited for spring to get the garden going and will encourage you to start living the way our grandparents did. I haven't fought the environmental fight in a long time, but Joel is encouraging me to get back on it, but with a different approach; one through historical common sense, like self-provision. A truly great book!

Great content. A little repetative.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Great content. Edit it to reduce repetitiveness, then I’d say everyone should read/listen to this book. I found myself wishing I could speed up the delivery.
