Beauty and the...boxer?

When the thoroughly poised Charlotte Worthington requests that Miss Thorn and her cat, Fortune, find her a position, she never dreams the savvy employment-agency owner would reunite her with Matthew Bateman, her brother’s former bodyguard. Matthew is about to be knighted for an act of valor, and he and his sisters could use some polishing if they’re to enter society after his elevation. Yet how can Charlotte maintain her calm, cool demeanor as their sponsor when she harbors a secret love for him?

Matthew Bateman cannot forget the beauty who is miles out of his league. Once a boxer called the Beast of Birmingham, Matthew would like nothing better than to be worthy of Charlotte’s hand. As old enemies and new ones attempt to bring him low, can Matthew prove to Charlotte that their love is meant to be?

If you like sweet, witty Regency romances, then you’ll love this fifth foray in the Fortune’s Brides series by award-winning author Regina Scott.

Best in the Series!

Never Kneel to a Knight is a wonderfully sweet Regency romance in the Fortune’s Brides series by Regina Scott. Each book in the series starts with the mysterious Miss Meredith Thorn and her beloved cat Fortune as they place down on their luck gentlewomen in places of employment. Never Kneel to a Knight is the fifth book in the series wherein Charlotte Worthington needs to find a position after her brother gets married so as not to be a nuisance in the newlyweds home.

Miss Thorn offers Charlotte the post of etiquette teacher to Matthew Bateman, her brother’s former bodyguard, and his sisters. Matthew is about to be knighted for saving Prinny’s life, which is explained in detail in Never Vie for a Viscount. Matthew, once a boxer called the Beast of Birmingham who reportedly killed a man in the boxing ring, definitely needs “polishing” before he enters Society after his elevation.

Matthew is one of the most worthy heroes in the entire series. Not only does he take his younger sisters into his household after the death of his father, but he also protects them from the evil clutches of his stepmother who treats his sisters as slaves (visions of Cinderella came to mind). Plus, he supports the man he supposedly killed in the boxing ring for several years after the fight. It is no surprise that Charlotte falls in love with him. I fell in love with him myself!

I listened to the audiobook version of this story, narrated by the amazing Jannie Meisberger. I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a good regency romance. Thankfully there is at least one more audio in this wonderful series!

Beauty and the Beast in Regency attire:)

Fortune's Brides is a series that is not only entertaining but also addicitive:)
The fifth book is as good as the previous ones: sweet, funny and romantic... And although we had a glimpse of something budding between Charlotte and Matthew in book four, I waited impatiently for their story to be developed fully:) And it's a nicely done story - a Regency version of Beauty and the Beast, with some deliciously vile side characters...:)
As in all the books in the series, the best part for me is the way Ms Scott builds the romance between the two main characters, showing their insecurities, doubts, but also strengths and the slow development of both love and trust between them. It's not the fast, meet one day marry the second Harlequin romance kind of plot; Charlotte and Matthew work together and admire each other long before they admit even to themselves that what they feel is something more than just friendship and respect. And when they finally act on their feelings, they are strong, tried out in strenuous circumstances and thus, hopefully, unbreakable.
As for the interpretation, the series couldn't have had a better narrator; Ms Meiseberger adds so much warmth and kind of truthfullness to the story and the characters themselves... She makes me believe I do find myself in Regency England, mingling among the upper and lower circles of the English nobility... I just can't imagine anyone else reading the series to me:)

Fun Regency Romance Series

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and any opinions expressed herein are my own.

This is the fifth book in the Fortune's Brides series. It is a standalone book but it does center on two characters who were part of a previous book in the series. The characters are likeable and the story was entertaining. This is a delightful series! Anyone who is a fan of Regency Romantic stories will enjoy this series.

The narrator, Jannie Meisberger, is the same for the entire series. She is a perfect fit with a very pleasant voice and just a wonderful narrator.
