Lita Mendez was a thorn in the LAPD’s side. An aggressive police critic and gang activist, she’d filed countless complaints against the department. So when she’s found dead in her home, Shane and Hitch fear the worst: that there’s a killer in their ranks.Outside the crime scene, Nixon Nash, the charismatic host of a hit reality show called Vigilante TV, has set up shop with his television crew. Nash’s show is dedicated to beating the cops at their own game, solving murders before they can. Now he has the murder of Lita Mendez in his sights and he presents the detectives with a choice: either join his team or prepare for a public takedown. But Scully suspects that Nash isn’t the folk hero he seems. If a detective got in his way, just how far would the TV host go in the name of self-promotion? On the heels of The Prostitutes’ Ball, called “the best Scully yet” (Kirkus Reviews) and “perfectly fresh” (Booklist), this new novel from the celebrated author has Detective Scully risking everything to save himself, his family, and the job he loves.

Praise for Stephen J. Cannell: “A master storyteller.” (Michael Connelly)
“A great storyteller who keeps you nailed to the page.” (Ted Bell)
“Cannell is the gold in crime fiction.” (Stephen Coonts)
I am sorry that this last book in the series is the first I have read. It has all the elements of a good mystery - twists and turns, interesting characters, and it is well paced. But the standout feature is Mr. Cannell's iconic used of words and language to describe characters and situations. The only other mystery author I have read who could make me laugh out loud with delight at their turn of a phrase was Dashiell Hammett ("A bullet kissed the door jam by my cheek."). The narration is perfect, and this book is worth the listen. Loved it.
Retired CFO, Army wife, Mom of five, Grandma of six, two sons who served in combat, love to read books that reflect my values and faith, love mysteries, historical, military stories, and books that don't waste my time . . . if it doesn't have an ending that was worth the wait, I'm not a happy camper.
Wow . . . my first Stephen Cannell book, but not my last . . . excellent narration . . . great story line . . . and had me guessing until the end . . . listened on a road trip . . . had to finish it . . . couldn't wait . . .
Love to read and listen to books. I prefer detective stories, but also read some sci fi.
I liked the pace of the story.
Yes, because you did not know what was going to happen next.
I did not laugh or cry, but it did touch a nerve considering the injustices some people will do to make themselves look better.
A GOOD READ, Author Stephen J. Cannell, is my first, so I took a chance and it was well worth it.
Yes, good to listen while working etc.
The end was predictable. The journey was worth it though.
He is one of the best, that is why I bought the book.
Nurse, mom, loved to read....but now I love to listen. When I retire I hope to hear waves crashing in 1 ear and audible in the other!
Scott Brick's fabulous narration!
Both Shane and his partner....they work well together, funny and very protective of each other for two macho guy cops. Scott Brick's narration brought them as well as the other characters to life. I could see the fear in Marsha's eyes and Lee Bob's long bony fingers, I could feel the tension in the air. This guy is so good......
The entire book was very good, the ending was especially good for Shane when he gets his shot back at Nash.
Cop vs. psychopath...who is the vigilante?
So I see this is the middle of a long series and after reading the reviews, I will have to find time to start from the beginning.
i am addicted to audio books. I always have one on in my car, or on my i-pod when I'm cleaning or shopping. I always have loved to read
Shaun Scully is one of my favorite detective. I enjoy how he thinks and how oblivious he is to authority. Somehow he always comes out on top
I continue to enjoy Cannell's series work. Looking forward to the next. I'm sure somebody has thought of this but... these would make a good basis for a TV show.
I'd recommend the book to fans of his countless TV shows because Shane is the typical Cannell hero, over the top in so many ways but good in the end... too damn bad if some semblence of adherence to the rules are tantamount in importance to the story.
VIGILANTE is probably a remake in print form of a half dozen SJC TV eps over the 30 plus years of his prominence in TV production... most likely an ep or four of HUNTER where the hero is exiled from the force and alienated from his peeps at great risk to his status, health and well-being while he pursues the truth, guns blazing.
Of course as an emerging author myself I have an abiding interest in how Cannell- one of my creative heroes for 30+ years- conducts himself in the guise of his heroes, and there is plenty to emulate here.
Brick is a great reader for material like this, excellent energy, very consistent, with the added bonus that his name sounds like a Cannell TV hero.
i think the audio version is better than the print version.
yes it did.
i have heard him on all of the shane scully series and his voice is captivating.
